Focus Don't let anything come between you and your goals.
It's a horrible feeling, that moment when you've been doing everything right – but the day just keeps getting in your way. Maybe you had to take care of an important errand, or there was some unavoidable event that took most of your time. In any case, it feels like the day has just been one interruption after another. And now where are we? You didn't get as much done as planned before work got in the way and now you're probably behind on everything else.
You want to get started on something, but you don't know where to start. The mental fog has gotten so bad that you don't even know what direction to start in. You could try to refocus a little, but you're stuck in the middle of a fog and have no idea where it's going. You're totally not sure how you'll ever find your way out of this maze of mental confusion.
The key is not being too hard on yourself. You haven't failed, you've just had a bad day. No one succeeds every time with no obstacles in their way. You've had setbacks before and you'll have them again. What's important is figuring out how to not let them change your entire life.
You've got to remember that you can still succeed – and that staying motivated is the only way to do it. When your motivation is down, you need to work harder to keep it up. Sometimes that means getting away from anything that might distract you, and focusing on what really matters. It's not an easy thing to do – but it's a necessary one.
Sometimes it's hard to know how exactly to focus when everything seems like a distraction. A lot of the time, distractions are just good things happening – stuff we don't want to take our attention away from, but at the same time need our time for. It might be the person you're hot on the phone with, or a deadline for a big project.
Whatever the case may be, there's always going to be stuff going on. So how do you stay focused? The answer is to don't let anything come between you and your goals. To do that, you need to pick your goals carefully. And when it comes down to it: pick them because they're something important – but don't let anyone else make the choice for you.
You have to be able to think for yourself – so don't let anything else decide that for you. When you do that, you'll notice that all of the stuff in your life doesn't disappear. You might get distracted from time to time, but it's always going to be a choice. The way you can handle distractions is by knowing what's really important. If it's something important, then don't let it distract you or weigh down your decision making process. If it isn't, then you shouldn't let it get to you.
That means you can be a little more lenient with the stuff that's not as important. If there are more important things going on, then you should focus all of your attention on those. If there aren't any more important things to deal with, then don't feel like you have to stress over a smaller issue too much. It's the same thing as how successful people don't sweat the small stuff – they're too busy worrying about what really matters.
