In many ways, silence is a source of great strength. It can help you focus on the present and move past fears and worries. In certain situations, silence can also make it easier to be more productive. Rather than socializing with colleagues or editing your next PowerPoint presentation, you may be able to work undisturbed. 

There is much to learn from silence – it can be an anchor in the ocean of the hustle and bustle that we are all constantly immersed in these days!

The frenetic pace of everyday life stresses out many people in the modern world. In the United States, stress levels have risen to an all-time high; we are working longer hours for less money, and, on top of all this, almost half of us feel anxious or depressed at least once a week. 

In a society where time constraints are never-ending, and noise is ever-present in nearly every situation, how do you maintain your sanity?

Silence is a source of great strength.


How can you deal with the pressures of your hectic lifestyle? One approach is to turn back to old models and understand them anew. In the past, the silence was used as a tool in daily life by farmers and other people whose activities centered around the land. It was not an escape from the world but rather – a source of great strength.

The idea that silence can be beneficial is echoed throughout history, but it is the Buddha who said it best: "To remain silent is more conducive to wisdom than ten thousand teachings.


This is important for modern people. The concept of meditation to relieve stress originated when people from contemporary society looked at religion to deal with stress. If you look at the state of the world through this traditional lens, however, it makes sense to seek rest from your hectic lifestyle through silence.

When we are busy and rushed, it becomes easier to feel stressed because we often feel overwhelmed by the pace of our work and by the noise around us. We can do nothing to change our circumstances, so we try to feel better by working harder. 


However, these efforts only create more anxiety. I imagine a doctor having their patient sit for a few hours in absolute silence – the patient would no longer be able to keep track of time. This is an unpleasant situation for anyone, but it certainly makes the doctor's job easier!


Everything has become showier than ever before in our culture (and many others), from sports to entertainment. We often celebrate products instead of their functionality. When you look at these things in a different light, it turns out that they are not only wasteful but harmful for us.


One way to look at modern society is as if it were a psychological disorder. In the absence of silence, you remain attached to thoughts and emotions resulting from your upbringing. In this situation, meditation can be your best friend: by practicing silence regularly, you get in touch with yourself and let go of the pressures that life places on you.
