This aims to summarise the idea that one should always set themselves up for success by doing what others are not willing to do. The author argues that as long as we are not willing to break rules and make ourselves vulnerable, we will never take the long-term benefits of success. Furthermore, if you plan on being successful, it is better to act today than tomorrow.
The first few lines, ‘Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t.’ summarizes the importance of setting yourself up for success by doing what people aren’t willing to do. By doing something that most people are not willing to do, you would be able to stand out among all other competitors and also break your comfort zone by jumping right in the middle of an uncomfortable situation (in this case you are breaking rules).
The next few lines, ‘I will love it if I am rewarded for it.’ describes our emotions towards what we are willing to do as well as the response from other people. We like to be rewarded for doing things that make us happy.
The next few lines, ‘So nobody can say I didn’t try.’ points out the importance of taking action now rather than waiting for the ‘right time’. It is better to take action now, than wait for later. This point emphasizes the idea that if you wish to succeed, you should not wait until tomorrow to act.
The last few lines of the poem are, ‘Tomorrow I can’t do what others won’t.’ We realise that tomorrow will be a completely different day and we cannot do anything that others won’t. We have to stay within our comfort zone by staying within limits and set ourselves up for success.
A similar line is found in the book "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. The line is: "Action is the real measure of intelligence." (in chapter 4).
There are many things that an individual could do everyday that others would not be willing to do. This idea can be summarised by making a list and rating each activity with an increasing intensity of difficulty from 1–10. By rating each activity, one can view and decide which actions are most worth doing to set themselves up for success. The rating scale should include:
The most difficult ones would be the most valuable in achieving one’s goals.
For example, if an individual wanted to learn how to play the guitar and be successful, they would have to do things that other people wouldn’t be willing to do. For example, a beginner may not want to get up early and practice every day, but this is what they have to do in order to succeed. Therefore, one should not start something that they are not willing to do.
It is possible that the person may decide that they do not want to practice everyday and will still be successful. However, this is unlikely, as they would never be able to learn anything in a few months (basic guitar skills) unless they practiced every day. Therefore, it is better to take action now than wait until later, when it will become too late to achieve anything substantial.
This idea can also be applied in business. If an individual wanted to start their own business then they would have to do things that other people wouldn’t be willing to do. For example, an individual may want to start their own apple farm and sell apples. However, this is something that other people would not be willing to do and so the individual should set themselves up for success by doing what others aren’t willing to do. They could do this by setting up their own farm and then getting people to come and buy from them. This would be getting into the business of selling apples, rather than just buying the apples for their own purposes, which is something that other people may not be willing to do.
Of course, there are many other things that one could do to even further set themselves up for success in business. However, this example is enough to illustrate the application of this idea.
There are many ways in which one can apply this concept. For example, if one wanted to get a new job or get into university, they should do something that other people aren’t willing to do to set themselves up for success.
Although there are many actions that one can do to set themselves up for success, it is important that no matter what you do, you always stay within the limits and boundaries of what is moral. The moral limits are different for everyone, but in general it is best not to take actions that break the law or go against one’s own personal beliefs.
Conclusion
This theory is best applied in anything that one wants to achieve that is outside of the boundaries of their comfort zones. By breaking your comfort zone, you will be able to achieve things that other people are not willing to do and realize success. Also, it is important to take action now rather than later because tomorrow will be a different day where anything can happen and you may not be able to do what other people aren’t willing to do.
