5 Simple Ways to Kick Start Your Goal-Setting

There are a lot of reasons for you to set goals for yourself, but most importantly (and regrettably), it’s important because it can provide you with the motivation and drive that you need to accomplish more. Let’s face it — without any reason to get out of bed in the morning, we would all sink into a deep depression. With goals, the day-to-day becomes easier; each accomplishment becomes another step towards greatness.

Here are five simple ways that you can kickstart your goal-setting and start accomplishing those dreams!

1) Start with baby steps: Instead of trying to tackle a huge project head on (e.g. trying to write a book or starting your own business), start with a small goal. Perhaps you'd like to run every morning or cut back on desserts. Whatever it is, keep it in perspective. Don't set yourself up for failure if you don't try too hard to succeed: that's what depression is all about!

2) Set the time: Instead of setting a vague goal, such as "I will do my best", think about how much time you plan to dedicate towards accomplishing that goal. If your goal is to run for an hour then start every morning by running for 10 minutes and build up from there.

3) Take action: As simple as this sounds, many people fail because they try and fail. Just because you set a goal doesn't mean that you will meet it. You have to put in the effort! If you don't want to be that person who failed at their goals, then commit to your goal and make it happen!

4) Make a list: Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated. That's why having a list of goals is so important (and motivational)! Write down the top five things that you are striving for. Keep them in sight to help yourself get motivated and keep on track with your dreams.

5) Celebrate: Remember that feeling that came over you when you accomplished your goal? That's the feeling of going on and achieving more — it's incredible! Make your success a mission and give yourself a reward for accomplishing your goal. Try giving yourself a hug or going out to dinner with friends.

If you feel like you are stuck in a rut, try turning to the following do it yourself psychology tips:

Break up big tasks into smaller ones: large goals look intimidating but can become overwhelming if not broken down into manageable chunks.

Make sure they are realistic: Once again, having goals based on what you think life will be like in 10 years is unrealistic; this might lead to disappointment and depression.

Find happiness in small victories: Find out how you can achieve small victories towards your goal and make it into an everyday habit.

Try a gratitude journal: When keeping a gratitude journal, write down three things every day that you are grateful for. It takes only a few minutes but can add up to a lot of positive feelings!

Goals are important. Make sure that you set realistic ones that will work for your lifestyle and that won't leave you feeling lost when you don't accomplish them. It's also important to find ways to ground yourself in order to stay optimistic about your future. If you are afraid of goals, know that it's not your fault! You just need to learn how to use them so that you can succeed and accomplish whatever it is that you want. If you want to get started with goal setting, check out the Moodscope Wellbeing program. An emotionally healthy person is one who can accept the world as she or he finds it, regardless of whether or not they think they could have designed a better one.
