[END ARTICLE]

Long John Silver, is a fictional character and the protagonist of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island , where he is depicted as an old pirate to whom both optimism and resourcefulness are inborn, who also displays a cunning wit and fits of temper (which are attributed to a physical defect). His name is a pun on "long johns ", or longjohns , which sailors used to pull up over their legs when they were cold.

Long John Silver was found by Robert Louis Stevenson in the folklore of the West Country of England, Scotland and Ireland, where he appears in many versions. In these versions, he is an old salt who engages in conventional pirate-like acts of piracy but also exhibits the virtues of honest seafaring: resourcefulness and ingenuity. He is also a guiding force for his crew, who are loyal to him despite his eccentricities and lack of discipline.

In Treasure Island , Long John Silver is the youngest character to be explicitly described, and his presence is revealed as a result of a trick played by Jim Hawkins. He is also the only "gentleman" pirate in the novel, and it was long believed that he was based on real-life historical pirate Blackbeard. The character has been praised for his resourceful nature and usefulness to the narrative's plot, especially in his role at Scuttle's funeral. However, critics have often regarded him as an antagonist because of his violent temperament, callousness towards children and Jim's mother, and negative role in Jack Sparrow's introduction to piracy.

Long John Silver was ranked the second greatest pirate of all time by "The Greatest Pirate" TV series, "The Black Sails" TV program, and the "Deadliest Sea Monster of All Time" lists. In 2003, Long John Silver was voted 80th in "Empire" magazine's list of The 100 Greatest Movie Characters.

Some literary treatments often focus on his character as an old pirate who takes advantage of those around him. A symbol of the old saying that one can't beat up an old man, though he's wise in the ways of violence and cruelty. He is also a positive force for all he does in order to help Jim and Henry save their shipmates from Davy Jones' crew.
