3 Ways To Help Overcome The Fear Of Success
It's a fear we all face — the fear of success. It seems like once you've reached that pinnacle, what else is there to do? You're at your goal, so where do you go from there?
But don't let the idea of success intimidate you. It's only scary if you compare yourself to others, because not everyone is in this neat one-size-fits-all mold. There are many ways to define success and many paths on which it can be obtained. Here are a few tips to help you get past success anxiety.
1. Believe That Success Is Within Your Reach
It all starts with believing that you can achieve success in your career, school or even in your social life. Without this belief, all of your best efforts will be meaningless, and you might as well give up right now. It's like running a marathon; before the race starts, you have to believe that you can finish it — otherwise why bother starting at all? Or like climbing Mt. Everest; if your mind is filled with negative thoughts like "I'm not strong enough" or "I'm not fast enough," then there's no point in even trying.
Instead, remember that you are here for a reason. What you're doing is important to you, whether it's your job, your education or even something as simple as being a good friend. When you internalize this, success will seem like less of a daunting goal and more of an obvious conclusion to whatever it is you are doing.
Your next question might then be: "But how do I believe in myself?" Well, this leads us to the next tip…
2. Use Affirmations Because They Work
Affirmations are positive statements that can help direct your focus towards goals and away from any negative thoughts that may be holding you back. Affirmations are often spoken aloud or written down on a piece of paper, but we're all capable of putting them into our minds.
For example: "I am confident and successful." Or, "I allow myself to feel excited." And remember, saying things out loud makes them more true. When you repeat affirmations to yourself over the course of your day, it will start to become a part of your subconscious mind.
A great way to start your day is by repeating an affirmation at least once before getting out of bed and again before going to sleep. It may sound strange, but it works.
3. Expand Your Comfort Zone And Use Paired Coping
Next, you might want to try learning about a technique called paired coping. It is all about expanding your comfort zone and increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome. To use this technique, you will have to take an action that falls outside of your comfort zone, but that you believe will eventually lead you to success in your chosen path.
For example: Let's say you have been struggling with anxiety and depression for years and have never really made any progress in terms of finding a better method for coping with these feelings. But one day you decide to try a new therapy, because you believe that it might make a difference. You feel some apprehension and nervousness about doing something so unfamiliar, but remain positive and confident that this therapy might be exactly what you need.
After some time passes, you are feeling more relaxed than usual. Maybe it's the new medication, or perhaps this type of therapy is better for you. Whatever the case may be, your mind is gradually becoming more accepting of this concept and all the positives involved with it. With time and practice, paired coping can help push your comfort zone outwards in order to achieve success in any number of fields or situations.
4. It's All About Moving Forward, Not Backward
Along the same lines, after you develop some confidence in yourself and begin to accept that you are capable of success, you need to remember that not everyone is going to like you for who you are and what it is that you do. You can't get hung up on the negative reactions from people around you because there is a good chance they will change. People are built in a way where they cannot stay stuck with the same opinion forever; this is just how we all evolve as human beings.
Whatever your progress level may be right now, there will always be some who disagree with your actions — this is just a fact of life. However, the sooner you pull yourself out of this thinking pattern and start to focus on the positive aspects of your personality and capabilities, the more you will improve. And all of this will add up towards a successful career and successful life. [END OF ARTICLE]
