A Career In Medical Transcription: Is It For You?

Medical transcription is a great career option for people who are looking for a fast-paced and exciting job. The work can be challenging and the hours are long, but in return you will get higher pay, flexible scheduling, and the opportunity to go out into the field to take dictation or interpret what someone else is saying. Medical transcription jobs also offer benefits that include dental coverage and employer-funded continuing education classes.

However, this career also comes with some complications: it consists of long hours in a cramped office setting with coworkers that you may not like much; there is little room for advancement; and there may be few opportunities for medical transcriptionist outside of the medical field.

If you think you want a career in medical transcription, here are some things to consider:

Work Environment

Like most jobs, working as a medical transcriptionist can be stressful and tiring. You will spend long hours sitting at a computer and deciphering speech into text. You may have to listen to parts of a CD over and over in order to get everything just right. Depending upon the office environment, where you work might or might not be very pleasant. Please read this article for an explanation:   Things To Consider When Deciding On A Medical Transcription Job .

Be sure that you are in good health before accepting a position. Health issues could affect your performance and ability to perform the job.

Career Advancement

Medical transcription is not a career that tends to promote advancement opportunities. You could improve your skills by taking more continuing education classes, but you will most likely always remain as a medical transcriptionist. If you want to continue working in the medical field, consider getting additional training for other areas of medicine such as: X-ray technician, MRI technician, or surgical technician.

Many transcriptionist are stuck in one city or region, which is the reason for so many telecommuting opportunities.

Opportunities Outside of the Medical Field

As a medical transcriptionist, you will always be working in the medical field. You may want to find a job that has more of a "regular" career path like an office manager or an accountant. In order to do this you need to consider your interests and what you would enjoy doing on your free time. If you love music and want to become an entertainment writer, then look into entertainment journalism or music journalism as possible career options. If you enjoy the outdoors, you could become a tour guide.

Although medical transcription is a great job for someone who wants to go to school part time and make some extra cash, it may not be the best choice for someone who wants both a career and life balance. During your school years you will have less free time, but once you graduate you will be working long hours during the week with only two days off during the weekend.

If this doesn't sound like a problem for you, then medical transcription could be the perfect career choice.

Good luck!
