Adult ADD: Are You A "Fire" Fighter?
Do you find yourself focusing on something for 2-3 hours and then with seemingly no warning get distracted (and annoyed) by something else? You might be a "fire" fighter.
Not everyone has the same ADD symptoms, but people who have the inattentive type tend to be described as forgetful, always losing their keys or phone, easily bored and often guilty of procrastination. This is because they are not hyper-focused on any one thing so they switch tasks more frequently.
Fortunately there are many treatments available to help adults with ADD manage their symptoms. ADHD is a hormone imbalance, and most adults with ADD have their symptoms controlled by taking the right combinations of Ritalin or Adderall. But for those who don't respond well to those treatments or have other health conditions that may worsen their ADD, counseling may be an alternative treatment.
Psychotherapy is an approach that helps adults understand how their ADD symptoms affect them, and how they can manage them. Psychotherapy helps adults examine the causes of their behavior and learn how to cope with these. Psychotherapy can include individual psychotherapy (e.g., Emotional Freedom Technique), group therapy (e.g., Conflict Resolution Therapy), family therapy (e.g. Family Systems Therapy), stress management (e.g., Hakomi) or cognitive remediation.
Stress management is a treatment often offered to adults with ADD due to its usefulness as a form of stress relief in reducing symptoms of ADD. Stress management can include Relaxation Training, meditation and biofeedback, which work to alleviate tension and worry that can be responsible for many ADD symptoms.
Cognitive remediation is another potential treatment option with potential benefits to adults with ADD. This is a form of treatment that helps people boost their focus by using methods like the Pomodoro Technique, which help encourage more productive thinking.
The Pomodoro Technique is a method of time management that uses a timer to break down work periods into intervals and then encourages short breaks in between. This method was created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and has since been adapted numerous times to help people make their work more productive. The technique can be used by anyone, but those who have ADD are thought to benefit the most from its use.
With the right treatment strategies, adults with ADD can learn to manage their symptoms so that they get more done without feeling distracted by things around them.

Martin Wann, Ph.D., and Mark Lee, M.A. for CHADD, and Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D. for the Association for Psychological Science and "The New York Times" write that "ADHD is a complex disorder of uncertain etiology. The symptoms can be very disruptive, but medication, behavioral therapy and educational methods have provided symptom control for many people."
This may be the result of an inadequate diagnosis. In 2007 a survey of members of the "European Society for Paediatric neurology (ESPIN) revealed that only about 30 percent received a correct initial diagnosis. Moreover, perhaps as many as 30 percent received an incorrect ADHD diagnosis."

Conclusion: "ADHD is a life-long condition, and it's not just children who must be treated for it. Adults can have problems with focus and self-control as well. The key to effective treatment of adult ADD is to find the root causes that drive the symptoms, then work to resolve them."
