Balance: Entreprenurial or Workaholic?
It's a question that many people ask themselves, whether they're launching a new project or trying to manage their work-life balance. When you hear it, though, the assumption is often that either you're an entrepreneur or you have no life outside of your job. The truth is much simpler than that: there are two extremes to achieve balance in your career. The middle ground is where your interests and goals line up with what's happening in the world around you. It allows for healthy, short breaks from work during the day so as not to be distracted by other tasks -- such as caring for family members -- when needed. Keep in mind how being constantly on call affects not just your productivity but also your health and well-being.
Entreprenurial or Workaholic?
When you become an entrepreneur, balancing work and life is one of the most challenging aspects of self-employment. You dedicate yourself to building a new business from the ground up, and you may want to take pride in knowing that the business is your baby. For some people, this means you're likely an "entrepreneurial workaholic." If that's you, then you are likely very comfortable with what it takes to get things done. You know when not to take a break and you're even probably one of those people who gets up at the crack of dawn to get things done! Although juggling both work and family responsibilities are part of the job, you may also find yourself sacrificing the health and well-being for your business. If that's what it takes to get ahead in your business, then by all means go for it. However, very few people are happy to work this way because they're truly unbalanced.
Middle Ground: Balance Still Matters
Balancing work and life is important, but there is another option. There is a middle ground, a healthy balance between being self-serving and being unselfish. If that's you, then you're likely very adept at handling the demands of work and family life. In fact, one of the best ways to stay focused on your career goals is to think about which things need to be taken care of at home while you're at work and which things can wait until after work hours. On top of that, your family members will also benefit from your focus on business instead of taking care of their needs all day without much gratitude.
Balancing Work and Life Benefits Your Family
When you are self-employed, you can take as much or as little time as you need in order to be with your family. This flexibility gives you the freedom to balance work and life. As long as you still receive a paycheck, that's all that's required by law. You are also free to set your own rules: set boundaries on what time of day you'll be available for work and when family is most important. For example, it's normal for moms who have young children to give their kids a bath only at night after they go to bed while business owners have the choice of taking time off when they need to make sure their work is done.
