Beat Procrastination This New Year
Are you one of those people who put things off until the last minute and it ends up taking them twice as long, if not more? Do you constantly search for distractions to avoid doing the tasks that require your attention? Do you ever just sit around, looking at your watch because you knew this was supposed to happen earlier and now it’s getting closer and closer to being too late and it’s all okay because there’s always tomorrow to get started on whatever it is that needs doing?
Stop living like this. It’s not just a bad habit, but it can be detrimental to your life. Procrastination can be a way of hiding your insecurities and vulnerabilities, and it can also work as a shield against being made fun of or bullied.
The truth is, procrastinating less will make you feel more confident about yourself, allow you to get more done in the same amount of time, and prevent you from feeling insecure about what other people think about you. It’ll also help you stop forgetting things or letting your focus shift too quickly when unexpected things happen.
Procrastination is often something that we do rather than something we should do. It’s something that comes naturally to us without us even realizing it. We know that we have to do something, but we wait until the last moment to do it. It may be due to a general lack of motivation, the realization that something is too difficult or not worth doing, or simply the fact that procrastination represents an escape from reality.
Obviously this habit is not good for you, but why are people so prone to procrastinating? Here are five of the most common reasons why people put things off:
1. You don’t want to feel bad about yourself. Procrastination is often linked with feelings of inadequacy and lacking confidence. We don’t want to feel bad about ourselves, we don’t want to jeopardize our self-esteem, and we don’t want to deal with the negative emotions that come with it.
2. You need time alone. When we decide to start working or going through a project, we tend to do so in a rush and without really having enough time or being prepared for it. We often say that “we only have thirty minutes,” but people often procrastinate at least for an hour or two before getting started.
3. It’s easier to hide your insecurities and vulnerabilities. Procrastination is often used as a cover for our insecurities and weaknesses, a way of avoiding things that we don’t want to face. In order to send the message that you’re not afraid of anything and don’t need help, you start procrastinating.
4. You can get out of a situation easily if it doesn’t go well. Procrastinating is also a way of saying, “If something bad happens, I can just wait a little longer and it will all go away.”
5. You’re not really using your full potential. Procrastination is the inability or unwillingness to use your full potential, or an unwillingness to react in the best possible way to an event or circumstance when given the opportunity to do so. It may make you feel as though you’re not in control of your life.
As mentioned above, procrastination is often something that we do rather than something that we should do. It’s a habit that we can get rid of and it’s something that you should work on. Here are some tips to help you start improving:
1. Set up a schedule and stick to it. Figure out when you will have time to do what needs to be done or wanted to be done, and make sure that you don’t break the schedule. If something comes up that is more important, then determine how much time it will take and make changes accordingly.
2. Take action as soon as possible. Acknowledge the fact that procrastination leads nowhere, makes life more complicated, and causes unnecessary stress. When you accept the reality of procrastination, you will feel less anxious and stressed.
3. Identify the things that you need to lose. Set up a list of things that you don’t want to procrastinate on, and for each item on the list mark it down as if it were already done. This will give you motivation and keep your eye on the prize.
4. Take action when an unexpected task arises or opportunity appears. Don’t wait until you have a lot of time or are completely relaxed to start working on something new or taking care of something that needs doing. Start working on the task when you first have time, or as soon as you can.
5. Stop being afraid of failing or doing something wrong. Don’t worry when things go out of order or turn out differently from what was expected. Accept that there will be failures and mistakes along the way, but you can learn from them if they happen and move on without regretting them too much.
6. Make a list of your goals and focus on achieving them step by step, one at a time. Set up realistic goals for yourself and then start working on them one by one until they are completed. If you are not sure how to start or complete a task or project, ask for help from someone who has more experience or knowledge in that area.
7. Set up a reward system. Give yourself rewards when you’re done with something, or when you achieve a certain milestone. This way you will have something to look forward to and work towards and it’ll keep you motivated until the goal is met.
Your first step starts with taking action and overcoming your hesitation, but it can go much further than that and help build your self-confidence. With practice, developing good habits, and routines over time, your fear of failure will be reduced as well as the procrastination associated with that fear.
Don’t wait until you have a lot of time or are completely relaxed to start working on something new or taking care of something that needs doing. Start working on the task when you first have time, or as soon as you can.
Doing this will make it much easier for you to set up a schedule and stick with it, so that you can avoid procrastination and use your full potential to achieve your goals and dreams.

Procrastination simply means choosing something less important instead of the thing that we really need to do.
