In today's competitive society, it can sometimes seem like reaching your goals is impossible — especially if you're dealing with difficult circumstances.
For many people, it feels like the odds are stacked against them from the get-go.
And even when you do achieve your goals — and get a promotion, for example — it can seem like life isn't really that much better than you were before.
But what if I told you that that's actually not the case?
The real secret to becoming successful is to simply begin by doing whatever it takes to make getting started possible — whether that means taking up an extra job or focusing on an entirely new hobby.
This post has been put together in order to help you learn why it's important to overcome any obstacles that life may throw your way in order to reach your dreams.
1. The Truth About Why You Will Fail to Achieve Your Dreams
You've probably heard it a million times, right?
"Dreams don't work out. It's just not possible."
And the simple truth is that this statement does have a certain amount of merit — if you're trying to achieve something that's completely unrealistic.
But what if I told you that there are actually some very tangible reasons as to why goals like "become a millionaire" or "create a global #1 bestseller book" actually seem so difficult?
Here is why...
Habits
It's not the goal itself that's unrealistic, but rather the habits that you need to form in order to make your dreams a reality.
Take the case of Robin Sharma, who has achieved a truly remarkable amount of success in his life by having one singular goal: "to become a millionaire."
In fact, he's been able to achieve this goal despite being born into poverty and going through some very difficult circumstances early on in life.
And what makes Robin Sharma's inspirational story so remarkable is the fact that he was able to achieve his dream even though he didn't have any real talents or skills.
But that doesn't mean there's no way to overcome these odds — it actually just means that you need to form some new habits.
And because everyone is different, it's important to understand the exact habits that will work for you.
Here are the habits I believe can help you achieve your dreams...
Habit 1: Begin Where You Are
Simplistic as this may sound, getting started on a goal truly boils down to one thing: begin where you are.
Not where you want to be or even where you feel capable of being, but rather in the very place in which you currently find yourself.
Yes, it's possible to jump over a small hurdle — like getting started on a new hobby or taking up an extra job — but if you're really not able to make the start then you need to deal with that obstacle head-on.
That's because many issues have become more important in our lives than the things we used to be able to focus on — and if that's the case then we need to change that.
You see, there's always a way around any obstacle, no matter how big or small it may be.
Habit 2: Surround Yourself With Others That Can Help You Achieve Your Goals
While this may seem counter-intuitive, it really isn't when you think about it.
For example, let's say you're trying to start up a business but you don't know where to begin.
The best thing you can do is surround yourself with others that know what they're doing because they've already been down that road.
This is why I recommend starting a mastermind group — or some type of team-based support system.
Habit 3: Focus on the Process Instead of the Outcome
While it may seem like focusing solely on outcome is the most effective way of getting things done, in actuality we're more likely to be successful when we focus on the process instead of the end result.
This is a concept that Tony Robbins goes into great detail about in his book, Money: Master the Game .
But you don't need to read a book — you can just ask anyone who's ever been successful.
The point is that success isn't always something that happens overnight — it's a process.
Habit 4: Focus on the Journey Instead of the Destination
"Don't worry about your destination, worry about your journey."
This isn't just some random quote — it actually sums up what we've been talking about.
See, when you're able to understand that the journey is more important than the destination then truly anything becomes possible.
And we can do that by learning to accept things "as they are."
The key realization is that we tend to focus on how things should be instead of how they actually are — and this is where the obstacles come in.
Another example of the importance of focusing on the journey could be found in a story I heard from Tony Robbins.
One day he was speaking to someone who was having a hard time breaking into the industry they wanted to get into.
That person told him that he had set out to become an entrepreneur — but kept on failing at it.
But that's when Tony Robbins told the person how to get over his problem.
"You need a purpose for doing this, not a goal."
Now, I'm not sure what the end result of having a purpose for your goals is going to be, but it's an incredibly useful concept — especially when you're starting out and really not sure where you're heading.

Conclusion
Life isn't always going to be an easy road.
But if you can accept this truth before you begin, then the journey is bound to be a little easier.
And that's because many of us are always waiting for the right time, right place and right situation to arrive before we begin — instead of simply making it happen for ourselves.
That's why it's important to remember this one simple fact:
Dreams don't work out. It's just not possible. But you can make them work out by forming new habits that allow you to overcome obstacles when they arise along the way.
