Stage 2 is where you introduce relaxation methods to the patient. The easiest way to do this, and one which undoubtedly works, is for the therapist to use his/her voice. One of the most effective hypnosis methods is known as "themes." A theme can be described as an "Angry Birds" episode where Red actually represents your anger and the birds represent your fears. In other words, you are powerless against these things, it's impossible and pointless to try fighting them and so on. In stage 3, you'll be learning to recognize your own hypnotic state. The easiest way for beginners to do this is by using a pendulum (a string with a weight on either end). This is what we call the hypnotic swing and it works by creating an automatic response. Basically, if you were to ask someone "Are you in hypnosis?" they can answer honestly because they are responding automatically, before their mind has registered how they feel about answering that question.
Stage 4 is the point where you're going to teach people how to use self-hypnosis. You'll be instructing them in how to "guide" themselves through the hypnotic experience and learn how to do it under their own power (without being influenced by outside sources). There are 3 methods for this: recording a CD, using the help of a friend or therapist, or doing it by yourself. It's important that you choose one method, because if more than one person is using your CD, then their conscious mind will take over when they reach that part of the process and they'll stop listening. The easiest way is recording a CD as this can be done by yourself rather than needing help from another person.
Stage 5 is what you might call the "automatic response." If you've done everything correctly, the patient will now be able to use hypnotism on a regular basis. This can be done by them sitting down, relaxing and talking themselves into a hypnotic state (like some recorded hypnosis audios that use this method). The secret here is to not force anything. Remember, they'll already have seen the pendulum swinging before automatically answering questions so they should already know how it feels when it's working right. But if they're not coming out of trance on their own after 20 minutes then come back and re-read stages 1-4.
Stage 6 is simply the art of removing subconscious blocks. You'll want to remove any negative suggestions that you might have given at earlier sessions and also then give any positive suggestions needed. For example, if someone is having issues with social anxiety disorder, a good suggestion to make is "I love speaking in public" or "I'm always able to speak clearly when I need to." The best way to do this is record a mix CD using positive phrases of your own making.
Stage 7 is the "checkup," in which you ask them about how things are going and see if there are any issues that need to be dealt with (if not then jump straight back into stage 5). This can be done by email, over the phone or in person.
Before we go any further it's important to mention that hypnosis is not a replacement for therapy. In fact, it's best used as an addition to your existing treatments. You'll want to replace the word "I" with "you" in the first paragraph if you're going through this process because hypnosis is something you do alone (even though there are professionals present). Remember, if you're feeling a little uncomfortable at any point during this process then that's perfectly normal and don't hesitate to go back and re-read stages 1-6 again. With practice and patience, you should find that this process works wonders for your mental health and wellbeing.
