 Fly Fishing Rods

Are you an avid fly fisherman? Do you have no idea what the heck to do with all these rods?! Well, fear not! We at Fly Fisherman Headquarters are here to help. In this post we will go over what types of rods there are for fly fishing and their benefits as well as how to choose a rod that is best suited for your needs.
Rods for fly fisherman come in different shapes and sizes. There are two main types of rods that you will find when you look around the store. These types are called telescoping and fixed-length rods.
If your fly fishing rod is telescoping, then it has a butt section that attaches at the end of your line (the rod will not have a handle or knob on top). This section is where the line will be tied to the fly line, so if you were to break your line on a fish, this part can greatly affect how well you are able to land it (depending on how strong your rod is).
Fixed-length rods are not telescoping. Instead, they feature a longer section at the end of your line and the rest of your rod is made up of smaller sections. This longer section is usually less prone to breaking than telescoping rods; therefore you are not as likely to lose your line when landing a fish.
When choosing a fly fishing rod, be sure to consider how far you would like to cast and what type of fish you would like to catch with the rod. Longer rods are often better for casting further out from shore and casting with heavier lines (for larger fish). Lighter weight lines are better for casting close to shore and using lighter flies. In addition, telescoping rods (especially those with smaller butt sections) are easier to use with lighter lines and can also be used for casting lighter lures if you don't mind the telescoping action.
After choosing the type of rod you want you can then choose what length is best suited for your needs. The longer a fly fishing rod is, normally the more powerful it is. The longest rods typically feature metal or graphite mainsprings, whereas shorter rods feature more lightweight materials such as fiberglass. Shorter fly fishing rods are great for beginners because they are not too hard to handle and have lighter line lengths than longer counterparts (this will allow you to cast light weight flies easier).
