How To Excel In Your Performance

How To Excel In Your Performance

Work on the performance with your eyes open and stay calm.

Focus on the music, and not what is happening around you.

Know your instrument well so that you can fix any issues without thinking about how to do it.
Have a plan before arriving at the venue, this will help both with nerves and performance preparation.
Drink plenty of fluids, eat something nutrient dense and keep hydrated.
Stay off social media right before going on stage to avoid distractions and false comparisons.
Be prepared for audience feedback and follow the instructions of the band/audience.
Maintain a positivity level, no matter how difficult it may be.
Take care of yourself on and off stage, this will help keep you in control of your emotions and physical health. Exercise before shows/rehearsals to cope with anxiety.
Create an onstage persona that fits with the music instead of trying to imitate what others do.
Don't try too hard, if you look like a rockstar you will get over-confident and sound like one too!
Set up tight if possible, without entanglements or distractions (ie: pens flying every direction) that can hurt to move or trip over. If you must have your laptop/setlist then make sure it's not cluttered and not in the way.
Stay hydrated, water intake before and during the show can help with hydration, as well as keeping your mind sharp.
Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to move around in. Change them if possible because they may break down over time leading to anxiety and other health issues.
Wear comfortable CLOTHES that make you feel happy, safe, tight and confident.
Avoid heavy metal earrings, bracelets or piercings that may get caught on equipment/other people's clothes.
Always keep a close eye on yourself and your body during the performance, this will help you focus and not get distracted by any pain, discomfort or illness.
Be safe and smart out there, no matter how good you think you are.
Practice makes perfect, so keep practicing to improve your performance.
Use an amp that is made for your genre of music to provide better tones.  The sounds can influence everyone's perceptions of your sound; this is why everything that could possibly be wrong with your amp is always being talked about in the band's Facebook Groups...
Be yourself, even if there are people out there who may only see you as a dress-up doll/Chop Chop.
Don't try to impress anyone, including the audience!
Have fun!
All of this advice can be broken down and applied both on stage and before shows/rehearsals.  Stay positive and have fun at all times, no matter what situations you may have to deal with.  The experience will only make you better, so keep practicing and performing for your fans! The Music Industry Isn't Always Beautiful: The Struggles Of Becoming A Musician Pt.1
The Music Industry Isn't Always Beautiful: The Struggles Of Becoming A Musician Pt.2
In this first video, I discuss the struggles that happen in the music industry, and how they can affect even the most talented of artists.  Struggles such as  fear of failure, exhaustion and general lack of support make it difficult to do what you love.
This was an extremely long video (about 3 hours) so I will be breaking it into two parts.

Conclusion:
Life can definitely be difficult for a struggling artist, but there is so much opportunity out there for those who work hard.  If you want to succeed in the music industry, then you need to be a part of an instrument/vocal group, socialize and make contacts consistently, keep your eyes open and help others when needed.  Never give up!
