Restaurant Accommodation

 Restaurant Accommodation

Some restaurants have started to offer accommodation for those with food allergies, dietary requirements, and special diets. These spots are popping up in cities like London and New York City to help the restaurant industry meet the diverse needs of diners. But some are questioning whether this is really a good idea when these accommodations may lead to discrimination against people who don't fit into what restaurants consider their "best" niche demographic.

New York City's Zahav Restaurant is planning to open an allergen-free hotel according to the restaurant's chef and owner, Michael Solomonov. This would be the world's first allergen-free hotel. The food at the restaurant is already prepared without allergens such as dairy, peanuts, shellfish and gluten. As of now, the restaurant is only a few blocks from where it will open its allergen free hotel in 2016 according to Solomenov .

Solomanov has already opened one other location of his Israeli inspired restaurant in Philadelphia. He hopes to bring the concept of the allergen-free hotel to other cities as well. He says, "it's a business model that can be replicated in every city." The chef says he hopes this will be an opportunity for people with food allergies to travel just like anyone else would be able to. He believes that this hotel will give the restaurant industry a chance to learn more about food allergies and hopefully become more accommodating .

The menu of Zahav, Solomonov's restaurant, serves mainly traditional Israeli food. It has many vegetarian options as well as meat options including lamb, fish and chicken. It also has hummus made with beets. They also have plenty of gluten free options that are already prepared without being cooked in the same fryer as gluten containing items. As of now, the restaurant is not allergen free. However, they are working on a menu that will meet the needs of people with food allergies. Solomonov believes that this hotel will be a great place for people with food allergies to stay as well as travel.

Title: A Food Allergy App?! What?

Abstract : What or who is a food allergy app for? I mean, it's not like you can run to the App Store for allergy help when something happens on the fly. But it's absolutely the most important thing to have in your arsenal when you're out to eat. There are thousands of allergy apps out there, so I've picked the four best below (either free or for less than $1) for you to put on your phone today.

Food Allergy App: Anaphylaxis Emergency Response (free)

This is my favorite app. It's a comprehensive food allergy app for those with allergies. It tracks your food and medication allergies, symptoms and emergency contacts. The app also includes information about specific allergens and how to treat anaphylaxis with an epi-pen.

It also has an optional monthly auto-renewable subscription for $1/month which allows you to enter your own notes about reactions you've had and what works best when treating them. It's a great tool for making sure you don't forget things between doctor visits. It's got a simple, easy user interface.

Raw Food Allergy App: (free)

There's no real substitute for cooking at home from scratch, so I really like this one too. It's a great resource for finding out all the different raw foods that you can eat, such as desserts and snack bars. It even has a section on how to master the art of blending your own juices with fruit or herbs.

I'd recommend this one to a friend. It's a great e-book that you can get for free.

Food Allergies & Intolerances App: (free)

Sometimes you just have to know what you can eat and when, when traveling. This app is great for that. It includes a comprehensive list of foods and beverages you can eat at different times, ranging from "avoid" to "eat." It even has a section on fruit and nuts, which are closely linked to food allergies.

I have this app on my phone too. You get the free version and there's no time limit. Just like the other two apps, you can subscribe to the info-packed monthly e-book ($1/month) for "food allergies & intolerances" which I also recommend as a great resource for cooking.

Conclusion : It's nice to know that there are great apps for managing your food allergies. I like all of these and would recommend them to a friend.
