The Positive Affirmation Dilemma

 The Positive Affirmation Dilemma

This article will examine the benefits of positive affirmations and the pitfalls of their overuse.

Positive affirmation is an important component of a healthy psyche. These are all based on the idea that if you confirm something enough, it becomes true for you.  For instance, if you say to yourself "I am a good person" long enough and with conviction, eventually it may become " I am a good person."

This technique can be used to motivate oneself or as self-encouragement or as self-talk - especially when one feels low and at their worst. It is also helpful in cases where one might be dealing with depression, anxiety attacks or other similar afflictions.

It is highly recommended to use positive affirmations in conjunction with self-hypnosis and other mental techniques to ensure maximum results.

The first thing that we need to do is find a method for writing positive affirmations down. These should be written as if you are speaking the thoughts aloud. You will have to say them out loud about twenty times before you will feel completely confident that they are created correctly.  Some people feel best once they have repeated them about a hundred times.

Make certain that the affirmations are clear, concise and do not contain any overblown imagery or powerful sounding words such as "powerful," "grate," "thrilling," or "strength. These are not needed and may actually be counterproductive.  These are not only unnecessary, but they can also be harmful to you if used incorrectly.

Here is a sample example of a positive affirmation to use for motivation:
"I have plenty of time to accomplish what I need to do."
Some people find it helpful to write messages where they talk about their past accomplishments. Always make certain that you are writing in the present tense. In other words, do not say "I am." Instead, say "I am doing it now."
This type of self-talk is intended specifically for times when you feel overwhelmed or stressed out and have a tendency to catastrophize the situation by wondering how bad things will get.

Part of being a successful person is working on your self-esteem and self-confidence. You should believe 100% in yourself, but you also have to see the reasons for why things are happening that seem negative or undesirable.  For example, if you go out to eat at a restaurant where you feel uncomfortable and act out, chances are high that you will experience some negative reactions the next day when you think of all the time spent there.  Instead of blaming yourself for making a mistake at one place, be able to look back and think of all the other times that you have been comfortable with certain foods before and why they made you happy.

This method works very well with the help of self hypnosis techniques.

In continuation of our series "What Are Your Thoughts...", we are continuing with this article with Dr. John Sacks' thoughts on the following question:
"What are some tips that you have to live a happy life?"
Here is his answer to this question:
"I would have to say that the most important thing is to make sure that you are doing what makes you FEEL good . For me it's about finding my passion and making it a bigger part of my life than anything else I do. This way, I am ensuring that no matter what happens in my life, I will always have something to look forward to doing.
For most people, this does not mean going out and searching for your passion; rather you have to take time to discover it on your own.  You will know what it is when you start doing it. My advice is to find a way (and there are many different ways) to incorporate your passion into your everyday life as much as possible - even if it's just a little bit at a time.
In the end, this will make you happier than anything else and will keep you going through the hard times of life."
