 Developing A Positive Mental Attitude

Self-esteem and a positive mental attitude are achievable goals that can help you succeed in all aspects of your life. A positive mental attitude is one that is constantly striving to improve itself, while simultaneously bringing out the best in others. In order to achieve a positive mental attitude, you will have to confront your fears and grow accustomed to change. Amidst changes that may come with anxiety or failure, you must work on developing an inner strength derived from trust, respect for self and the ability to forgive oneself when mistakes are made.

Successful people typically possess these qualities which may be hard for some of us more anxious individuals who tend not do well with failure or criticism because we perceive them as being threatening. Additionally, we might not forgive ourselves for mistakes we've made when they arise. This can be a real problem since it keeps us rooted in the past and prevents us from moving forward. But as you read this article, I hope that you'll begin to understand how important a positive mental attitude is, and how you can work on your own to achieve this ideal.

Everyone knows what a positive mental attitude means; but very few people know what the term actually encompasses. For example, although individuals with this quality are often described as being "upbeat," in fact that is not necessarily true -- for optimists (those characterized by a positive mental attitude) generally do have good days and bad days just like everyone else.

A positive mental attitude usually refers to a mood of optimism or hopefulness. Optimistic people expect good things to happen in their lives and in the world around them. Their expectations are realistic, however, rather than exaggerated or unrealistic. For example, an optimistic person might believe that she can successfully find a job if she looks hard enough. The optimist also believes that her efforts will be successful -- she won't expect to find a job within 24 hours of searching, for example.

Individuals with the capacity for positive mental attitudes are often described as being courageous and resilient when faced with challenges and difficulties in life, including stress-related problems. It is this spirit of courage, or resilience, that helps us to cope with problems and meet the demands placed on us in our daily lives.

Another feature found among those who possess a positive mental attitude is a sense of humor. Optimists have a tendency to look at life as being full of comical situations and people. Also, they typically enjoy seeing the lighter side of things because they tend to feel happier and more optimistic when they are laughing than when they are not.

What can you do if you don't have a positive mental attitude? Many people feel chronically anxious or depressed, but having a positive mental attitude really only has any value if you're able to carry it out into your everyday life. If you can't laugh at yourself or others when situations arise that might otherwise seem dire, you may not be able to achieve the positive mental attitude that you want.

Recent research has shown that positive mental attitude is a better predictor of success than IQ or grades are. The fact is, people with a positive mental attitude and a great work ethic tend to do very well in life -- especially professionally and financially. They generally have greater job satisfaction and advance more quickly in their careers than people who don't display these characteristics. Studies have also found this to be true in a variety of other areas of life as well, including career, financial status and marriage.

Indeed, many studies have indicated that having a positive mental attitude may have a positive impact on your health as well. Optimists have been shown to have lower rates of cardiovascular disease, for example. People who are positive in their outlook on life tend to have better results than people who aren't, it appears.

Many of us use the "positive" word when we think about our attitude, but what does it actually mean? A positive mental attitude is one that is constantly striving to improve itself, while simultaneously bringing out the best in others. In order to achieve a positive mental attitude, you will need to confront your fears and grow accustomed to change.

Amidst the changes that may come with anxiety or failure, you must work on developing an inner strength derived from trust, respect for self and the ability to forgive yourself when mistakes are made.

Positive mental attitude is a tool that will help you succeed in all aspects of your life. To achieve it, you'll need to first become aware of your own beliefs and thoughts. This means being honest with yourself when you experience negative things in life. The fact is, people with a positive mental attitude are more forward-thinking and open to change. They don't have time for criticism or excuses; they have their own issues they feel they need to work out in order to live a happier life.

Reviewing negative events in your life can be a good way to become more positive. Think back over the past few days, weeks or months and realize how many times you might have pushed something negative out of your mind. Don't try to forget these moments, but rather examine them. How did you react? Did you shrug it off and move on, or did you let it upset you? If your reaction was to think about the event in a negative way, then try to figure out why that occurred and how you might change it in the future. Although this may take some time for most people, once you've worked through such experiences, your outlook will change for the better.

While it may seem as though this is a difficult process for many (and it can be), the results are worth it. In time, you will naturally become more positive and less prone to negative thoughts. Positive mental attitude is an attitude that actively brings out the best in people, while also helping them cope with the problems they face in their day-to-day lives.

Conclusion:

Mental attitude is in part, choosing to be positive and optimistic instead of negative. Using a positive mental attitude to erase negative thoughts and emotions could be the first step in a hopeful direction for those battling depression or anxiety disorders.

By Ellen Hulse-Moskowitz, Ph.D., 65% of adults with an anxiety disorder have been diagnosed with depression-anxiety at some point in their lives. Depression and anxiety are both psychological problems that can interfere with an individual's ability to function normally at work, home or school.
