Allied Health Work Force Shortages Pose Concern

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) recently released their projections for a surplus of physicians in coming years, but the same report also noted a projected shortage in allied health professions.

The report identified occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists among industries experiencing a shortage of qualified professionals. The AAMC predicts that by 2016 there will be 100,000 jobs unfilled with available healthcare providers to fill them.

This issue is not only limited to these three professions; it is expected to affect other health care disciplines as well. Growing numbers of retiring workers have drained the workforce and created vacancies that are not always easy to fill. For example, a recent survey of the staffing needs in nursing homes found that only 7% of vacancies were being filled by registered nurses.

The shortage is expected to worsen as the baby boomer generation ages and may reach as many as 700,000 new openings by the year 2020. The AAMC did mention that their predictions are based on average growth and normal attrition rates; however, their numbers should give one pause for concern.

Unfortunately, there have been little to no efforts from federal or state governments toward remedying this situation. In fact, an increase in cost-sharing has created more challenges for providers because there is less revenue for fixed costs such as space and equipment.
Be careful not to place all your eggs in one basket and be proactive with these planning issues.

Conclusion: No matter who you are, you are going to need to take health and healthcare services into consideration when preparing for a retirement. The government is not going to be able to provide the services they do now, so the burden will fall into the private sector. Our healthcare system needs people like you who want to make a difference.
