Architecture and Architects Jobs
A big spanner in the works of architecture jobs is the dearth of available architects and draftsman. The reasons for this are many but have their roots in post-WWII urbanisation and suburbanisation, when demand for architects was so high that it could be difficult to secure a position. Thankfully, there are places such as New York City where it’s possible to find a drafting job on Craigslist or through an online job board.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, “The largest share (43%) of top pay goes to drafters who work with engineers or mechanical designers; they may use manual or computer-aided design tools to prepare drawings and specifications required by engineers. Most drafters and technical illustrators learn their skills on the job, although many have formal training in vocational schools.”
Regrettably, it’s not all fun and games as an architectural draftsman. In fact, the work can be quite arduous. Architectural work is sometimes referred to as 10 per cent inspiration followed by 90 per cent perspiration, which aptly sums up the amount of toil required to produce a final product. This is why architectural drafting jobs are often highly sought after positions with a salary to match. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that “Drafters who design buildings, equipment, and machinery earn about $38 hourly or $79,430 annually on average in 2014.”
But there is more to a drafter’s role than merely creating blueprints. “Drafting work involves a number of complex processes, from the initial creation of drawings to the final analysis and preparation of the design. Drafting work is performed in many engineering, architecture and related industries. However, drafters usually specialize in one particular industry or type of design. For example, an aerospace drafter would concentrate on preparing drawings for aircraft or spacecraft.”
As you can see, it’s only possible to get jobs as an architect through several years of study and training. For those not keen to pursue a degree in architecture, it’s worth considering a related course such as civil engineering. This will at least put you in a position to move up the ranks within the field or make an easier transition into architecture itself.
In the meantime, those desiring to work as drafters can find employment with companies like Autodesk and Trimble. Both companies have an extensive list of clients that vary from small firms to multi-national corporations. Their skills are so sought after that they have even been featured on TV shows such as ‘Steel Genius’ and ‘Super Skyscrapers’.
Although there is no set career path in architecture, chances are you will have to get your foot in the door with a drafting job before making the move into a full-time position. It’s certainly better than nothing and might be enough to secure your first step on the ladder.
Each skyline is different and each architectural style is valid in its own right. The best architects and draftsmen aren’t necessarily the most highly paid. They are the ones with a drive to create, to innovate and to push the boundaries.
