Career Planning in Today's Turbulent Times

The 2016 Presidential election has caused a lot of uncertainty in the job market. And people are wondering: are we on the brink of another recession? In challenging economic times, you may be tempted to hunker down, deferring to your safety net and avoiding risks that could potentially lead to greater success. But it is just as important- if not more so- for you to take proactive steps now to prepare for your future career plans.

Key takeaways from this article:

You need to form your career plan now, while you are still young. If you wait until you reach thirty-five or forty five years of age, it may be too late to change direction.
This is true even if you have an established career that is not meeting your needs. If a company threatens to leave or downsize, things could change in an instant and happen without warning: The company could shut down or be sold. Your supervisor could quit or transfer out of state. The industry could change, causing your job to cease to exist.
If you are unsure of what type of job you want, try taking some online career assessments (like the one below) to see which careers match up with your skills and interests and the degree of risk that suits you. You may be surprised at what professions show up in your results!
If you are interested in pursuing a new career path, research potential employers in your area before applying for jobs there. Consider the cost of living, the types of industries in your geographic area, and whether it is a great time to be entering your desired field.
This article lists several career paths that may not be common in today's environment. However, they are growing in popularity due to shifting demographics and increased demand. For example: robotics engineering:   The average age of robotics engineers is 29 years old. This is a new field that will continue to expand over the next decade as technology progresses.  Have you ever read books by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows? They wrote the bestselling book "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Society.   I would highly recommend it, if you are looking for a good story. It makes me wonder what careers I could pursue that I have not thought of before. These authors have demonstrated the power of pursuing career paths that others may overlook.

Conclusion

It is an interesting phenomenon to note that the narcissist who is thrust our way from time to time, often comes from a very predictable place: the military. By virtue of the majority of them being male and most likely from a lower socio-economic background, they are also still, quite literally, part of the hive. Therefore under all their bravado and swaggering, there remains in them a deep need for adulation and admiration. They will seek out those who will validate their very slow slide into insanity by paying attention to their every word.
If you ask them what they did on a particular night five years ago they will tell an entertaining story that never happened but makes them appear very interesting to others who are listening in.
