Common Job Interview Questions And Answers

A job interview is an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about an organization and the position you are applying for. It’s also a time for you to prove yourself as a capable candidate, so it's worth preparing for. There are certain topics that often come up during interviews, with these being common questions:

What would your strengths be in this role? What skills do you bring to the table? How would your experience factor into this role? Why should we hire you?

Our blog post will show potential responses to these types of questions, along with general answers that can help when interviewing.

What are your strengths?

The main things that you will want to highlight in this section will be any related skillset or experience. These could include:

language skills, such as a second language or proficiency in business English; typing speed, accuracy, and other administrative skills; computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite etc.); sales and marketing experience (or anything related to the role you are applying for); project management experience; customer service experience; attention to detail; communication skills – for example being able to write clearly and persuasively, giving presentations etc.; management / leadership experience.

Think about the core skills required for the job and how you could show the interviewer how your possible strengths relate to those requirements.

What skills do you bring to the table?

Think about any other skills that you may have that aren't directly related to the job description. You could mention:

any volunteering or charity work that you have been involved with; any hobbies or sports; language skills (if you're fluent in a second language); experience in other industries, if it would be relevant; any courses or qualifications that are particularly relevant to this role.

How would your experience factor into this role?

Your interviewer will likely want an overview of your experience and how it highlights your suitability for the position. Try to relate your experience to what you know about the company or specific role. For example:

Any previous experience or projects you have completed that are similar to this position should be covered in detail. If you are coming from a different industry, talk about how your experience could be applied to this role – for example, if you've worked in a customer service environment, then mention any transferable skills that would apply directly to this job.

You should also have some useful examples ready and easily accessible which you can use in an interview. Examples include:

specific projects that you worked on that you can discuss with the interviewer – these could be related to the product or service that is being offered, with your thoughts about how it could be improved; examples of your achievements that are relevant such as your full resume or a portfolio of work; a CV / cover letter.

while any examples of previous jobs (even if they were related to sales and marketing) are great, try not to go over them too much. If you have a large amount of experience then it can skew the focus away from the interview process. You'll have the opportunity to give a full description of these during the interview.

Why should we hire you?

Many employers will assume that you've already considered this question and have an answer ready, so use it as an opportunity to expand on any points that helped you choose this job.

For example, if the new job is a step up in responsibilities and interesting challenges, then you could mention:

how the company or role will be further developed in the coming months; this could be any changes that are planned for the business, or specific goals that have been set; your interest in this particular role – how it's different and what you think will make it an interesting challenge; any qualifications, experience, skillset or transferable skills that you would bring to the position. If relevant take this opportunity to mention anything relevant to your application (for example: related courses / qualifications); your intention to work hard and go the extra mile; how you would fit into colleagues' work-life balance.
