Differentiate or Die - 3 Keys to Eclipse Your Competition

The next 12 months will witness a seismic shift in the way businesses operate and compete on the marketplace. With technological advancements in automation, artificial intelligence, robotics and other digital technologies, the cost of labor is increasing while productivity is decreasing. Businesses no longer have time to react to these changes with sluggish processes and outdated practices; they need to be agile enough to anticipate these challenges head-on. Being reactive simply won’t cut it anymore.

During a time of such technology explosion, businesses need to focus heavily on differentiation. To be more profitable and successful than their competitors, businesses need to stand out among the rest and offer something unique. Businesses who fail to differentiate will eventually be replaced with superior services from competitors and may even go out of business. Differentiation is the key to surviving in this ever-changing world.

Standing Out From the Crowd

Differentiation doesn’t mean a business has to reinvent the wheel or completely revamp its operations in order to stand out from their competition; it simply means that their value propositions need to be stronger than their competitors’ in at least one way or another. If a business is offering the same exact service as their competitors, there isn’t much differentiation to be had. However, if a business can find ways to differentiate itself based on value and price, it will be able to stand out among the crowd and have an advantage over its competition.

There are three key elements that businesses can focus on in order to differentiate themselves and gain an advantage over their competitors: product, price, and promotion. Each one of these aspects is extremely important in ensuring optimal success in today’s competitive business world.

Product

Businesses need to focus on offering a better product than their competition. It should be of higher quality, have more features or benefits, and provide consumers with something they truly value. If a business manages to do this, it will stand out significantly among its competitors and customers will not only trust the brand but they are more likely to spend more money on it.

Price

It is no secret that consumers are extremely price sensitive – especially in today’s economy where jobs are scarce and life is expensive. Price plays an important role in many customer’s decisions of which product to buy so knowing how to effectively position yourself based on price is crucial. A company that is offering a lower price than their competitors is going to stand out since customers will feel a sense of relief knowing they are saving money and have a choice between two or three options.

Promotion

Another key way to differentiate your business from its competitors is to have an effective promotional strategy. This entails creating original and tailored marketing campaigns that are tailored towards the needs of your target market and delivered through various channels such as social media, online advertisements, and word-of-mouth communication. Theories suggest that consumers feel more loyal towards brands that make it easier for them to develop relationships with them. Those brands may even work harder for those customers through more attentive service.

As we continue to enter a time of automation and digitalization, differentiation is crucial in order to sustain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Businesses who fail to differentiate themselves from their competition will eventually be outpaced by those that are offering something new, innovative, and fresh. The key is to create an experience for customers that is memorable and encourages loyalty towards your brand.
