Distance Learning Is Not For Everyone

Distance learning is not for everyone. It’s true! The cost and time commitment involved, for starters, make it a difficult choice for many people. That said, there are plenty of non-traditional ways to learn new skills through distance education — tutoring, online courses from top universities, online classes from top prep schools. And if you think that you might want to be an OSU professor someday? Distance learning offers a lot of flexibility in terms of your schedule and the types of subjects you teach! Whatever your reason for considering distance learning as a path for your studies or career—there’s no doubt that it can lead to significant personal growth and professional success. As you continue down your educational path and look for ways to strengthen your qualifications, then distance learning is an option worth considering.

What follows are some reasons why it’s a great choice:

1. You Decide How Long It Will Take You To Complete Your Program

Distance learning is an ideal option if you’re looking to balance your professional and personal life with your studies. With online courses, you can take as many or as few classes per week as you want. If you start a class on Monday night at 8 p.m., then finish it by Thursday evening at 6 p.m. it will take you 8 hours to complete the class. If you start it Friday morning at 8 a.m., then finish it by Monday afternoon at 3 p.m., that same 8-hour class will take you 20 hours to complete!

That’s not to say that distance learning is a great option only when you have an easy schedule, or when there are long breaks in your work timeline (like the holidays!). Distance learning can be a good option if you need to study your course materials outside of the hours at which they’re offered. If you’re a working professional with a full-time job and schedule, distance learning can be a great way to do extra work that fits into your schedule.

2. You Can Study Whenever Your Schedule Allows It

You can study at your convenience with distance learning. If you have an evening class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m.–10 p.m., but your work schedule only allows for weekend study time, then distance learning is an excellent option! In this scenario, under normal circumstances you would either have to take the class during the week (and have to change your work hours) or drop it entirely and seek out a new course that works with your schedule. With distance learning, you can continue to take the class from home at your leisure.

Distance learning also offers you a lot more flexibility in terms of your schedule. Even if you don’t have a ridiculously busy schedule, you may find that on certain days you’re just too tired to make it to class! When that happens, distance learning is an excellent way to ensure that you don’t miss an opportunity because of your own fatigue! Distance learning can also be a good option when you want the flexibility of taking an online course but would prefer not to live in a dorm or drop out entirely. Distance learning requires minimal effort and very little time beyond what is required for attendance and completion of homework assignments.

3. Your Academics Are More Flexible

I’m not suggesting that distance learning is free of all responsibility; you will have to adhere to some reasonable expectations. However, you will generally be expected to work independently and meet deadlines primarily. Distance learning will allow you the flexibility to work on your studies without the distraction of having a professor sitting in front of you, observing and keeping tabs on your progress. Before you enroll in an online course, however, be sure to check with the university or school that offers it, as expectations will vary.

4. You’ll Be Able To Study With A Balancing Act Between Academics, Family And Work

If distance learning is something that interests you, then it can be a great way to strike a balance between academics, family and work. For example, you can structure your schedule so that you’re able to carefully manage your time. You might choose to study during the workday, then do your other work (or spend time with family and friends) in the evening hours. Distance learning offers this kind of flexibility, while still granting you access to the same quality education as students who are enrolled in traditional classes.

5. You Can Pursue Your Interests At Home And On Your Own Schedule

Distance learning is perfect for people who want to study what they want, when they want it and at an affordable cost. Distance learning will also allow you to choose a subject area that interests you without being limited by your local campus offerings or student schedules. You can pursue your passion in a setting that fits into your work schedule and leaves you feeling fulfilled. If the thought of commuting to campus or studying in the confines of a dorm makes you anxious, then distance learning might be an excellent option for you!

Distance learning is not for everyone. It’s true! The cost and time commitment involved, for starters, make it a difficult choice for many people. That said, there are plenty of non-traditional ways to learn new skills through distance education — tutoring, online courses from top universities, online classes from top prep schools. When considering distance education as a way to learn new skills and build your professional profile, consider the advantages and disadvantages, and you’ll be able to make the best decision for your learning goals.
