Do What You Love & Love What You Do
Rules to live by that will keep your happy and fulfilled as you go through life.
There are many rules to live by. Some of them we come up with on our own, while others we hear from people we admire and respect. But there are two specific rules that can be used in conjunction with any other rule or on their own to make you happier, healthier, wealthier, genuinely more carefree and effective at work: do what you love, and love what you do.
I've used these two rules to get myself through life and I want to share them with you so you can use them as well. They've helped me make the best of each day, year and decade of my life. So if you start doing these things I promise that you'll be happier and feel more fulfilled, regardless of what circumstance or situation you might be in.
Do What You Love: Love What You Do
Do what you love – this is one of the most important rules to live by in your life. This has single-handedly made me more successful than ever before because it gave me a positive outlook on everything I do. If you don't love what you do – no matter the time, day or week – it's going to be a losing proposition. If you wake up and say to yourself, "Oh I'm going to spend my day being unproductive." then that is exactly what you're going to get done.
If you wake up one morning and say, "You know what I'm going to spend my day doing? Working with the people that I love. I'm going to work with some of the most inspirational people on the planet, helping new business owners build their dream businesses." it's really hard for that not to be your day.
This is one of the reasons why I started my blog, why I started my online business, why I started all these different businesses. Because I wanted to work with people that I loved and respected and admired, doing something that I also love and respect and admire. Now every single day is an absolute pleasure because it's an opportunity for me to do what I love – not just on a weekend or a weeknight – but rather all of the time. And because of this massive focus, new opportunities are popping up in my life weekly.
Regardless if you have a job or not, you should look at whether or not your daily activities fall into this do what you love category. If they don't, then you should find something else to do so you're doing what you love every single day.
Love What You Do
This is a variation on "do what you love" but it's just as important. It's not enough to just do what you love. You have to love what you do because the simple act of loving your job or hobby is so powerful that it will actually attract more of the good things in your life into your life.
For example, I love writing. I actually love the process that goes into everything I do, from the research and learning phase to the actual writing itself. There's a tremendous amount of pleasure in every phase of it and it makes me feel very accomplished when it's all said and done. But I'm lucky enough to have this little business, this blog, that also allows for me to spend my days doing what I love – writing and helping people find their dream businesses – because it makes my job more enjoyable.
And just as important is loving your work – or what you do for a living. This is the one rule that will help you get your life together. When you're working at a job that you love, every day is a pleasure. Even if it's difficult and stressful. If a whole day goes by and you walk out of your office and are like "Wow, that was the most miserable day ever." then it means that you need to step back and reevaluate what the heck you're doing. Because if you love what you do – or even just like it – those tasks or hard work will be pleasurable.
For example, this morning I went to the gym for about an hour and my trainer pushed me harder than ever before on leg presses, squats, lunges, standing rows and other exercises. And I was like "Holy crap. That was a great workout today." As I walked out of the gym, I was so tired but also felt awesome because of it. And later on today when I went to work, all my tasks were so much easier and quicker than usual because I had this positive mindset and feeling of accomplishment, even though it was a tough day.
Ultimately love for your work is even more important than loving what you do because if you can't get behind something you're doing, then there's no chance that you'll be able to find success in it or make any money from it. So try to find something that you absolutely love and make it your life's mission to make it better from the inside out.
If you can do this, then you will never have a boring day in your life because every day will be filled with happiness, fulfillment and excitement. That sounds pretty good, right?
