Don’t Forget to Say Thank You for a Second Interview
The interview process can be nerve-wracking, confusing, and seemingly never-ending. Why not take a few minutes to say thank you for a second interview? It will help ensure the interviewer has a well-rounded idea of your character, and it lets them know you are sincerely interested in the job opportunity.
~ If you're given a second interview, use the following tips to help you get through it.
You don't need a whole speech or big dramatic gestures for the thank-you, just a simple and sincere "Thank you." It's not expected nor is it necessary to give an hour-long speech. Here are some examples:
"I really appreciate this opportunity... Without lowering myself down to your level, I like to say that I am appreciative of the time you have taken out of your busy schedule."
Or...
"Thank you for giving me another chance at this employment position. I believe that my passion for serving others is reflected in my job application process... Truth is, I would like to thank you for the interview and for taking a moment out of your busy schedule... I am looking forward to hearing from you."
~ You should send a thank-you note (followed by a phone call) after each interview. Doing so lets the interviewer know that you are interested in the job and helps them develop an idea of who you are, so try not to forget it!
~ To complete your thank-you note, try writing down detailed notes about what was discussed during the interview. This will remind you of important points, show that you learned from your mistakes, and that your mind is in the right place. Make sure you are honest with yourself, but try not to be too hard on yourself; it's easy to forget certain details. Don't worry about writing down everything perfectly; nobody is going to grade you on how you write down details.
~ If unable to write a thank-you note immediately following an interview, write it down as soon as possible after. It is acceptable to write the thank-you a couple days after the interview, so long as you remind your interviewer that you will send one soon. Back up your promise by sending the thank-you within two days.
~ If possible, the best time to call the interviewer is within 24 hours of sending the thank-you.
~ The note or phone call should be sent as soon as possible after the interview takes place. Don't wait around until you get home or wait until tomorrow: send it right then and there; it will remind them that you are working hard and interested in their job opportunity.
~ Try not to include more than two pages of information in your letter. It should be short, simple, and easy to read. Make sure you mention your strong points and why you would be a good fit for the company. Keep it short and simple!
~ There is no need to overdo this process. It is only a "thank you," nothing more, nothing less.
~ Last, but not least, don't forget to say thank you to everyone that helps you through your job search process!
You never know what position or job opportunity will come up next! Thanking them now ensures they will remember you when they do. Who knows, they might even put in a good word for you in the future (maybe even help get your foot into the door!) Even if it's a small company or an unpaid internship, thanking people for their time and consideration is always appreciated. This is something that shows character and a sincere interest in their company or business.
