It's a common misconception that the recruitment process is the same for every job. There are, at the very least, three different ways to find out about jobs: 

You can be proactive and search for a company that you would like to work for, then submit your resume through a third party website or contact HR in order to apply for an advertised position
  You can also use online platforms such as LinkedIn or Indeed to find new opportunities based on your skillset and desired work location.  Or you can be reactive and wait until a recruiter contacts you offering a potential opportunity.

Regardless of which route you choose, chances are that there are many more ways to find a new job than what you've experienced. In fact, the majority of new jobs will be found through traditional channels such as retail stores, advertising and direct contact with the hiring team.

So how do you stay ahead in this competitive job market? The answer is to take advantage of these power tools! Whether you know someone who works at an employer you'd like to work for or know they need a strong individual on their team, leveraging these tools will give you an immediate advantage over your competitors.

Being proactive does require more effort and time than being reactive, however the rewards are well worth it. Instead of waiting around for your dream job to find you, take a proactive approach to your job search.
