Five Steps To A Richer Retirement
Five Steps To A Richer Retirement
It's probably been a while since you had to do any troubleshooting on the home network. Your kids are old enough that they're not allowed to use anything but their school-issued iPads and your spouse has stopped using computers. There's a good chance that your last time doing any of this was for setting up the router or modem when you first got it!
Luckily, it's not too difficult to troubleshoot a wireless connection or internet outage. First, check all of the cables and make sure they're plugged in securely at both ends. Then reboot both the modem and router together by disconnecting power from them and then plugging it back in after 30 seconds (it's more important with newer equipment).
If that still doesn't work, check to see if there are any Windows Network Diagnostics issues by selecting Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. If it detects anything that needs repairing, then click on the appropriate button(s) to fix it.
That should get you going again! If not, try plugging an Ethernet cord from your computer directly into the modem or router. Remember that the modem and router are separate devices and you have to have both of them for this method to work properly. If you don't have an Ethernet cord that can reach your computer, you can buy a long one at an electronics store for about $10 (they're very cheap).
If all else fails, it's probably time to call for IT support. They'll be able to diagnose and fix the issue from their end and advise you on what you can do to prevent it from happening again.
Hope that helps!

This article is designed to help you troubleshoot common connection problems. This list of remedies may not be comprehensive, but if you have problems with the Internet, it's a good place to start.
If the problem still persists after trying these fixes, contact your IT department for further troubleshooting advice or call a technician.
