Get Started Your Career In Nursing
Nursing is a rewarding career that will allow you to make a difference in people’s lives and provide you with many benefits throughout your career. There are many different types of nursing careers to choose from, including staff nurse, nurse practitioner, or medical-surgical and maternity nurse. Here are some steps for getting started in the nursing field:
Step One: Get Educated
There are two pathways to becoming a registered nurse (RN). The education pathway lasts anywhere from two years to four years depending on which type of RN degree you were granted. The other pathway is the direct entry pathway for RNs who have a limited amount of education. This path requires you to take a series of entry-level tests to be able to obtain an associate’s degree in nursing or an allied health associate’s degree. Don’t forget to check out our list of schools that offer nurse assistant programs as well.
Step Two: Apply To A Nursing Program
There are many types of nursing programs out there, including programs that help you get your RN license and master’s programs that last from one year to four years. Once you have decided on a program, it is recommended that you begin your application as soon as possible. The sooner you start your application, the better chance you will have of getting accepted into the program. You can apply through a variety of different ways, such as using an online portal or sending in your official transcripts directly to the school.
Step Three: Determine Your Career Path
The amount of care needed by an individual depends on his or her state of health and age. For example, newborns require more stimulation than older children and adults may need more attention than those who are already elderly. Nurses can choose from almost any career path when they’re looking for their next position. For example, registered nurses can choose to work in complicated care settings, such as teaching hospitals or nursing homes. Because you will have to have a license to practice your chosen area of nursing, it is important to keep your educational goals and professional goals in mind when choosing a path.
Step Four: Make A Resume And Cover Letter To Attract Interviews
A resume and cover letter are the first things that the employer will view when you apply for a position. It only takes minutes to put one together if you’re already familiar with the process. Your cover letter must include key words that match the job description. For example, if you want to work as a school nurse, you need to put that in the cover letter. If a prospective employer sees this, then he or she will be much more interested in reading the rest of your resume.
Step Five: Start Networking
Once you have completed your cover letter and resume, it is time to start networking with people in the industry. You can do this by making phone calls or emailing potential employers. This will also help you find out when job positions will open up so that you can apply for them in advance.
Step Six: Get Your RN License
It is also important to have your RN license before you apply for a position. This will allow you to practice in a licensed facility, which is much more attractive to potential employers. The process of obtaining your license is similar to that of getting accepted into the nursing program. Although it can take a while, do not give up until you’ve gotten the chance you have been waiting for.
When it comes down to it, there are many options out there for nurses looking to get started in their career. You just need to channel your passion and enthusiasm for what you love doing and begin applying for positions that fit your skillset and ability level.
