Hats Off To Technology: Five Reasons Why
If you're anything like me, then you've spent a lot of your life glued to your computer screens. It's hard not to when everything is at our fingertips and networking is everywhere; yet so much of the world has been deliberately left behind. As we finally begin to realize how important this issue is, many are beginning to take steps towards a more eco-friendly future and heading back into nature for a time. This movement, however, is only just beginning.
Although we're all aware that something needs to be done, most of us leave it up to others to make the effort. But, by working together we can tackle much bigger issues and change the world for the better. Here are 5 ways you can help save the Earth...
1. Choose your electronics wisely…
It's far too easy to buy the latest technology without knowing what it's doing to our planet or having any idea how much energy it takes up in production. Stuff like washing machines and power-hungry TVs are big culprits: they all require a lot of energy and often create waste that ends up in landfill sites.
2. Recycle
The process of recycling is well established, but it's still easy to waste more than we recycle. Many products don't make their way through the whole lifecycle and end up being either sent to landfill or burnt out in a domestic boiler, which releases CO2 at a scary rate. A better solution might be to collect your old equipment via an 'eBay for rubbish' scheme.
3. Go car-free…
Concrete jungles of traffic noise and pollution surround us on every side, yet we do nothing about it. Why? Because the cars are too quick and easy to get around in, yet with all their fuel consumption they produce an enormous amount of CO2...
4. Pack a bag, leave the city and enjoy nature
The most effective way to get you back in touch with nature is to get out there! You'll learn much more about your world, meet new people and start making some of your own changes.
5. Find or form a local recycling co-op...
We've been using the same system of waste disposal for decades now. Surely it's time we realised that it just doesn't work with all of its pollution and wastefulness? We need to work together as communities and create systems to drive change. Recycling co-ops are great for this - they provide local systems which work from the bottom up and can make a huge difference.
8. Write to your local council and demand change
You don't get anywhere without knowing where you're going, so if you want to drive change then come together with other like-minded people and agree on where you want your community to be headed. Then, write to your local representatives with a clear plan of action in mind. If you're not sure how, here's how to set up a community group...
9. Spread the word
Now that you know how to get things done, don't keep it to yourself! Tell your friends, your family and even complete strangers who seem interested enough. The more people we all communicate with, the faster change will be driven.
While many of us are busy sitting in front of our computers, or glued to a TV screen, there's a whole world out here that doesn't need electricity. By leaving behind the electronics for a time and getting back in touch with nature we'll gain some perspective on just how easy it is to live without most of what we take for granted. So go on - unplug from your screen and get outside!

Conclusion:
As the world continues to be "freed" from the carbon based economy, it will result in a sea change in how humanity conducts itself on this planet. I can well see our current culture being relegated to an urban museum with its remnants left in boxes and cubby holes. I also expect that much of Earth's remaining wilderness will vanish before long. The new paradigm emerging is really here, we just don't see it yet.
I have spent much of the last few years trying to find workable solutions to our current dilemma. I have found a lot of what I view as false information and propaganda; but towards the end of 2000, I began to find some real answers.
