How to Apply For Job by Searching On the Internet
Wondering how to apply for a job on the internet? This article covers just that. It will help you figure out the best way to do your research, what type of company to research and how search engines can help you find them. For example, if you're looking for a recruiting firm in Austin, TX, Google Maps could be your best friend and possibly save you from wasting time by visiting hours of contact information with no phone numbers or email addresses. By the end of this post, not only will have found out how to apply for jobs online but also be able to determine which websites offer the most potential for success.
The Internet has taken over many aspects of our lives and created completely new industries from scratch (e.g., AirBnB, Uber, Care.com). As a job seeker, you should use the internet to your full advantage. Don't let it be your worst enemy. There are so many companies in this day and age where you can apply for jobs with an online application or just a click of a button; everything from retail stores to law firms to accounting firms and beyond.
Take Advantage of the Internet
Here are some of my favorite ways that I've used the internet in my search for jobs:
Post Resume To Publicly Accessible Sites – There are plenty of websites out there where you can post your resume (some examples include Indeed, ZipRecruiter, SimplyHired and Monster). Make sure that your resume is on these sites because they are easy to access and they may just end up calling you one day.
Post Resume On Social Media – Social media is a great way to connect with employers these days. I've gotten calls from recruiters when I've posted my resume on Facebook and LinkedIn before, so it really does work. It's an easy way for a company to get in contact with you and for you to research them without even actively looking for them.
Contacting Companies Through Their Websites – Many companies these days have their own website where you can apply for jobs directly through their site (e.g., Target, Wal-Mart, Freddie Mac). Don't be afraid to do a little digging and find the job application on the website. They are almost always there in some shape or form and they aren't hard to find.
Post Resume On Glassdoor – Posting your resume on Glassdoor is another great way to give yourself a leg up when it comes to finding employment. It allows you to market yourself while also giving you direct access and contact information for lots of different companies. As an added bonus, you can also read up on reviews of past employees that have worked for each company, talk about valuable resource!
Post Job Openings On Research Sites – A lot of research sites these days (e.g. Indeed, Monster, Glassdoor) allow you to search for job openings as well as keep track of your search and all the jobs that you've applied to, etc. It's a great way to see what all is out there and what companies are looking for.
Post Jobs On Research Sites – Yes, it's possible to post jobs on these sites too. Some sites that I like to use are Indeed and Glassdoor (they offer free posting). I've posted several jobs on each site in the past and received great results from both of them.
Post Jobs On Social Media – Posting your job opportunity on social media is an easy way for a company or recruiter to find you and vice versa. A lot of them are even looking for candidates in the Austin area. Many posts have a "Re-tweet" link where you can re-share the job opening to your friends and followers within seconds of posting it. I've used this method before as well on career sites and it's been very effective.
Get Out There And Go Networking – I'm not sure if this is the most popular method out there but sometimes you just need to get out there, meet people and get that face to face contact with companies. Don't be afraid to ask questions in person when you get an opportunity or walk into a company's presence. Somehow, you just have to do it. It's like a job interview to the fullest extent. Let your interests take over and go after whatever you are passionate about.
Researching Companies – It's a lot easier these days than it was when I first started searching for jobs back in college or even as recently as two years ago. Many of these company websites are easy to navigate and it doesn't take very long at all to find out specific information about them such as location, hours, phone numbers and more. You can find out even more juicy details such as what kind of people they hire, how much they pay and their exact mission statement if you go looking for that information on their website. It's just a matter of getting out there and paying attention to what information you can find out.
Search For Companies On Google Maps – I'm not exactly sure why more people don't do this, but you CAN search for companies on Google Maps. The best part is that when you do a search for companies on a map, it will show you the locations of all the different businesses around your location(s) that are searching for employees. So say for example that I'm looking for a job in South Austin but I see that Target is looking for someone to work at its store on Slaughter Lane, I'd take the time to contact them directly through their website.
Search For Companies On Craigslist – Yes, you can search Craigslist for jobs too! It's one of the easiest ways to find a job in your local area. You can find any and all sorts of jobs in your local towns by just going online and searching for "job openings" on Craigslist. There is even a sub-section on the website where you can search for jobs ranging from entry level positions to management positions and beyond. This is one of my favorite ways to find new opportunities each day.
Search For Companies On AngelList – I've tried this method once or twice but haven't been successful at it yet. I tried to search for companies that were hiring in Austin and found a couple but then the results weren't promising. I think this is a useful method to employ if you're looking for a more tech-oriented job but it does require some effort on your part.
Search For Companies On Indeed – On one of the first pages of results from Indeed's job search, you can actually find local companies that are hiring in your area. This is a great way to find out who is in your local area and how you can contact them directly. You can also use the advanced search option to see even more options and research companies before contacting them.
What To Say When You Contact A Company – There are plenty of different ways to go about contacting a company that you're interested in working for. In my experience, you can try sending them an email through the website, through their Facebook page or even by calling them directly (but I'd only recommend this if you've already spoken to someone about the job). Here's a good email script for when you contact them:
Dear [name],
I am currently searching for a position in [industry or field] and your company has come up as one of the largest employers in [city/state]. I would like to learn more about your position and what qualifications it requires. Your website ([company website] http://www.
Conclusion – This article was meant to help you as much as I can and has given you a step-by-step process on how to find a job in Austin. In the end, the best way to find a job is by doing your research and following through with your tasks. Don't be afraid of replying back to any company that contacts you or showing your interest in a position if it's one that interests you.
