How To Be A Good Wedding DJ
So you want to be a wedding DJ? Before you take this on, there are a few things that you need to know. First of all a DJ is not just someone who presses play and stands on the stage with their hands in their pockets. A lot of work goes into being a DJ and it can be expensive too.
A good wedding DJ will help the bride and groom determine what they want at the very beginning which may include music choices, style, whether they want live music or prerecorded tracks, lighting, introductions announcements etc. They will also coordinate any necessary equipment like microphones and sound systems with anyone else involved in the ceremony like catering managers and priests etc. The DJ will then rehearse when necessary with the band or other live performers if that is the case. They will also meet with the bride and groom at least once or twice to go over all the details.
So you can see that being a wedding DJ is not just mixing tunes. If you have never considered this before, here are some things that you need to think about before you decide to become a DJ.
The first thing someone must ask themselves is, "Am I willing to pay for all of this?" Being a wedding DJ involves equipment rental, learning new songs, time spent working with clients and rehearsals if needed as well as travel costs. After all of that, you may only make a couple hundred dollars in pay so there is no sense getting a real job with health benefits or anything to make money while you are learning. It's better to just go full time with your wedding DJ business.
You also need to think about how much time and energy you want to invest into the business and what kind of income it will bring in. Will it be just for weekends or do you want to have a steady income as well? Starting out is always challenging but if you are willing and able to put the work in, then I would recommend that you do so.
DJ's also need to have an ear for music and have an appreciation for all types of music. Some DJs may only play one type of music and that can work in some situations but it is not ideal since you may have to be the only DJ at a wedding. That is why you need to learn as much about different genres of music as possible so that you can play whatever types of songs will make your clients happy.
You also need to think about what kind of personality you have and what people will want from you as a wedding DJ. You can't just be brooding, depressed and morose or even worse, happy go lucky all the time because people will appreciate something in between those extremes. You need to have an interesting personality that people will enjoy having at their wedding. Ask yourself what kinds of things you would like to see at a wedding and then anticipate the type of music that will create those types of emotions or atmosphere.
You also need to know how much time you can spend working on your own without burning out. As you begin to get more experience, it is important that you take breaks and play other gigs if necessary so that you don't burn yourself out.
Finally, it's also important not to forget about the money. A lot of people just want a free wedding DJ and they don't think about how much work goes into all this either. Don't get me wrong, some people do that but most people will want to pay for a wedding DJ and some of them will be willing to pay a lot. It's just like any other business, you need to make money. If you have the skills and know how to do it well, then I would recommend that you take your time with learning all of this and try starting out on your own.
