IT Marketing: Using Testimonials in Your Elevator Pitch

When you're new to the business world, chances are that your elevator pitch goes something like, "I am looking for a job as an IT Manager. Let me show you what I can do." But these days, with so many jobs and company positions in the field, an elevator pitch is only going to get you so far. It's time for more than just a hype-filled sales pitch. The term "elevator pitch" comes from the idea of having a short speech that can be delivered quickly to someone who has no idea about who or what you are when they enter your office or home. Now while this is true and important, it's also irrelevant if no one else hears it. You need to have something that works for the listener.
Not only are people getting tired of hearing the same old hype, but chances are they are also hearing it from everyone else who is trying to sell them on themselves. No one wants to be sold, they want to be informed. So what needs to be said? The most important thing in an elevator pitch is how much you know about the subject at hand. Second is how much passion you have for it and finally how well it's put together.
So instead of just a run down of what you do and what your skills are, give those who listen to you the chance to ask questions about it. Answer their questions with the facts and not just hype. Give them the information they want and need, not the fluff that everyone else is giving.
What would be worse is to have someone who just simply heard what you said in an elevator pitch, but then they forgot it shortly after. So make sure that every word is truthful and true to what both you and they are looking for in this position or company. As long as there is mutual benefit between employer and employee, no one should be unhappy with how the conversation goes when it comes to jobs, positions or companies.
If you are trying to get a job or have someone interview you, do not just talk about what you know and have done, but show them it. Be sure to highlight the elements of your abilities that they are specifically looking for within the position. They can ask you questions about anything related to your skills or knowledge level as long as they have a clear focus on what they want.
If you're in charge of an IT department and need help with current projects or even hiring new employees, give them some samples of your work. Don't just talk about what you did, but show them how well it was done. Be sure to show them how you accomplished this feat, how much the project was worth and the money that was saved.
If you are in need of a new job, remember to give your company or prospective employer some samples of your work as well. Include what you did, how much it was worth and why they would want to hire someone like you. Be sure to make yourself stand out by researching the company and what they need so that you can bring something to the table that they cannot get anywhere else.
It doesn't matter if you're looking for a job, in charge of an IT department or just have an interest in their work; remember who you are talking to and give them what they need instead of just selling yourself. Do this and you will find that a lot more doors are open to you, your work and your abilities.
