 Job Search Tips

Job search can be a tedious and lengthy process, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to make your job search go smoothly:

Create a resume and cover letter that is tailored to each position you apply for. This takes time, but when you find the right company, it will be worth it.
Extend your network and connections by talking about your job search with friends, family members, people in other industries who have connections that might be helpful in finding what you're looking for. If you know someone who works at an organization or company where you want to work, ask them if they would mind introducing themselves for when their boss asks about applicants during the interview process.
Keep your resume updated. If you are starting a job search and have a few weeks between jobs, update your resume with your most recent job title, contact information, and reason for leaving the previous place of employment. This can be done on-line as well. If you have been unemployed for a while or do not have access to an on-line service, you can update it by sending it out to a former employer or professional contacts who you think might be able to use it during the process of finding work.
Be professional in everything that you do during the job search process. This means keeping your composure during interviews, being polite, and following up on the interviews with a thank you note.
Network online by contacting social networking sites like Linked In. If there is an organization that you would like to work for, contact the members and representatives through their profiles to make connections.
Do not give yourself time limits on finding a job or using job search techniques as this will make you anxious about completing the process. The job market is constantly changing. Using different types of advertisements will not guarantee job offers for every niche advertised. If a job does not work out, try again later.
Use a variety of resources for your job search, like craigslist.org, careerbuilder.com and monster.com. These sites have different types of positions available and sometimes even companies that do not post jobs to these sites will put their positions on them as well.
