If you're a small company, nonprofit, or blogger and don't have the budget or manpower for paid ads, then acquiring links is your only hope for success. In this article we provide a short guide to best practices and techniques to help beginners and veterans alike in growing strong backlinks for their website.
You'll learn what anchor text is, why it's important to use it correctly, best places on the web where you should get your links from (e.g. directories, news sites…) and how to ensure your links don't harm your website.

The first thing to learn is the difference between inbound linking and outbound linking. Inbound linking is when you get links from other websites talking about yours. Outbound linking is when you link to external content from your own site.
Starting with inbound linking, you need to think of it as a conversation with another site or blog. If you were to meet a person in real life and start talking with them, they'll usually ask you questions and use your name in the conversation. You should approach your link profiles in a similar manner.
When people talk about you, they will use your name or products/services name when linking to you. Example: "John Smith is the founder of SEO Hacker. He has written some great content on his site such as…"
Be sure to include keywords that relate to your business inside of the anchor text. This will help anchor text optimization (covered later) increase the probability that users searching for those terms find your website more easily.
The anchor text in links needs to usually be short, no more than 3 or 4 words. Using the name of your business and primary keywords is ideal, but it has to sound natural for the context of the sentence.
It's not uncommon for links that talk about your business to use your name in a sentence as well.
So what kind of sites should you get links from? The more quality the site is, the better. But there are also other factors to think about: how much traffic does it have and how closely related is it to your business?
Other things you should look at include how often they update their content and what their domain authority is. The Domain Authority is a score given to every website based on how many other websites link to it.
If you can get a link from a website that has a high Domain Authority then your link will be very powerful and will help your site rank higher in search engines such as Google.
It's not exactly fair to say one type of website is better than another, but we can say that if you are able to acquire links from sites that have more than 50,000 visitors per month then technically you could get the same amount of referral traffic without having to spend any time acquiring links. Think about it as an investment.
After you have your links, you need to make sure that your links don't harm your website in any way. One of the best ways is to ensure your anchor text is natural and related to the topic of the page on it. When you are linking to a news source or website, you'll want to include keywords that are related to the main topic of the article being discussed because they will naturally be more relevant in most cases.
This all sounds pretty simple right? However there is one final step: link building.
And this is the best part: it's really not that hard to get links! Once you have natural, relevant, high quality content on your site, you can use a few simple tactics to get other blogs and websites to link to yours.
Generally when you are looking for a site to link back to your content/site, you will want to do one of two things:
The first way is easiest, but not as powerful as the second way. The first way is if the website allows you to post a comment with a hyperlink. This method isn't as natural because there is no actual sentence with your anchor text in it linking your website with theirs.
If you can't post a comment, then the second way to get your link is to include a hyperlink in your email signature when contacting them. This method will be better for your backlinks because it will sound more natural than if you just put the link on their website.
