Marketing in a Mobile Age: Trucks Add Fuel to Advertising
Marketing in a Mobile Age: Trucks Add Fuel to Advertising Plans
In today’s mobile age, where consumers are browsing the internet on their smartphones and tablets as opposed to sitting in front of a desktop computer, many companies have had to adjust their marketing strategies. One such company is American Family Insurance Company (known for its nearly ubiquitous red, white and blue logo), which recently announced it will add digital advertising to the back of its trucks.
The trucks carry the slogan “Buy your insurance here! With our AMP policy you’ll be protected!” and then advertise www.americanfamilymobile.com, a redirected website that requires an app download if they want to avail themselves of the company’s home and auto insurance products.
American Family Insurance Company is not the first company to use this tactic, however. In 2013, Progressive Insurance began advertising its products on the back of moving trucks, much like American Family Insurance Company. However, Progressive has taken this one step further and actually purchases cargo space in transport trucks. The company believes it can reach 50 million people nationwide each month by doing so.
After consumers download the free app from either Progressive or American Family Insurance Company, they can save a $25 deductible for their auto insurance policy by paying for their policy with a mobile phone instead of a credit card or check.
Progressive also offers a $10,000 discount on its policy if a customer pays for their insurance with their smartphone. While this is not yet set up to work like Progressive’s cargo program, it’s very possible that in the near future this will be possible.
Ultimately, mobile technology is making it far easier to reach consumers in real-time and reduce the cost of advertising. As the telecommunications industry continues to evolve and companies become better at utilizing new technology, we can expect more companies to follow suit.

Conclusion -
There's a big shift going on in the world of telecommunications, and it's only going to grow. The biggest shift is happening where consumers are -- with their mobile devices.
By using products like American Family Insurance Company's mobile app, Progressive’s moving truck advertising and American Family Insurance Company’s cargo space, insurance companies are looking to reach more customers than ever before - wherever they are. Additionally, these tactics are cost-effective for companies because they don't incur costs for driving advertisements everywhere by car.
