The Medical Transcriptionist is a professional who transcribes medical records for doctors’ offices, hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. The work of the Medical Transcriptionist involves listening to recorded interviews or dictation tape and converting the spoken words into written text via computer keyboard. This article will discuss the training requirements needed to be a Medical Transcriptionist.
In order to become a Certified Professional Coder you must complete 900 hours of training from an approved school in your state (or online). The Computer coder courses include courses in Microcomputer Applications (CPC-12), Word Processing and Spreadsheet Literacies. The CPC-12 course is the basis of how a computer coder learns to draft a program in preparation for an entry level position in the field.
In order to be a Medical Transcriptionist you must have a bachelors degree in any field, three years of experience and pass an exam.
The university I went to offered many prerequisites, such as 4 years of high school and college or 2 years of college and four years of high school. These additional classes gave me better ideas on what type of person I wanted to be when I took medical transcriptionist training.
Also, I took a Medical Terminology class taught by a Medical Coding and Billing professional. The class was very informative and helped me understand the field of medical transcription more. Along with the Medical Terminology class there were several others that were very useful such as Psychology, Sociology and Physiology.
The classes gave me an idea of what my responsibilities will be as a medical transcriptionist and what is required of me to be successful in this profession. A few of these classes were BIO 101, 104 and 105, Chemistry 110A - all prerequisites that are needed for the major courses like chemistry, anatomy and physiology which are required for medical transcriptionist training. Along with my classes, I took a class to get me familiar with computers which was the highest level of any of the classes I took.
The other required classes of these programs are advanced computer applications, word processing and spreadsheets. These classes give you a better understanding on how to use various computer functions in order to develop your program(s). It also helps me understand how they work when they are being used in a program.
These courses will allow you the training needed to work in a medical transcriptionist profession.
The (MTI) Medical Transcriptionist Training Institute is a certified member of the International Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. The (MTI) Medical Transcriptionist Training Institute was founded in November 2000, by a group of Certified Professional Coders who recognized the growing demand for qualified medical transcriptionists and the need for current certification standards.
In order to be an official member of (MTI) you must pay an annual fee, complete 3 hours of continuing education and pass an exam every two years to renew your membership.

Take the Basic Computer Training Course from (MTI).
In order to obtain certification as a Coding Professional, you must complete 900 hours of approved training from an approved school. You can do this by completing an authorized (or pre-approved) program in your state, taking an approved course on line or through an approved course provider.
The computer code professional course is the pre-requisite for entry level positions within the medical field. You will have taken this class when you first started your transcription career within medical transcription or before enrolling in another program if you already had a nursing job.
Once you have completed the computer code professional course you will take the CPC-12 exam to receive your computer coder certification. The CPC-12 is a test that can be taken on line or in a classroom. The -12 test has become the benchmark for entry level positions within the medical field.

CPC Exam Prep
All students taking their first CPC course must also complete 4 hours of pre-approved anatomical, physiology and medical terminology study before passing the CPC-2 exam . (Thousands of codes are used every day within medical settings, but most codes aren't used in written prescriptions at all).
