Negotiating Skills: How to Obtain the Salary You Want
Negotiation is an essential skill that everyone must possess to get the salary they want and to avoid a lawsuit. Here are some tips you can use with your next negotiation.
First, keep this in mind: many people will tell you what's right and wrong, offer their advice without even knowing the other person, and make categorical claims of what should happen in any given situation. Unless you're back-to-backing them into a corner by saying "I'm not taking no for an answer," it's best to spend time trying out their suggestions so that you can discover which one might work best for you.
Second, if you wish to negotiate a salary, you need to get the other person on your side. As is the nature of people, some will be willing to negotiate with you and others will never see the need for negotiation. Before you start negotiating make sure that your negotiation partner shares your goals for the job and is willing to work towards them. If they are not open to discussing salary at all, then it's best to move on anyway. The most important thing is that you're both sharing a common goal.
Third, try not to make categorical statements such as "You should be paid xxx dollars. Period." Instead, ask specific questions that reveal what your peer values. This will help you discover what other people are willing to pay for. From there, you can find out more about their salary requirements and determine an acceptable range of money for the job.
Fourth, keep in mind that many negotiations require give-and-take. You may feel like you're losing, but the other person's needs likely have changed since they first made theirs known earlier that day. Don't allow yourself to become frustrated and unresponsive if this occurs; it's a natural part of negotiations and is actually beneficial to both parties in the long term.
Fifth, use a professional negotiator as your guide during this exploration process as much as possible. If you're negotiating a job and come to an impasse, then you can always consult with an expert on negotiations. They will provide objective insight and advice on your behalf to help get the job done. A professional negotiator can also help determine what is fair for both parties involved in the negotiation.
Finally, remember that there is a possibility of receiving feedback from the other person on how well your offered salary compares to theirs. Research has shown that negotiations are more effective if both parties feel like they're getting value, which is why it's important to ensure that your offer is fair.
Negotiating with a salary range in mind can help you discover what other people are willing to pay for and determine an acceptable range of money for the job. The act of giving and receiving feedback can also help both parties feel like they're getting value from the negotiation. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you get the job done; don't allow yourself to be frustrated with a negotiation if this happens as it will only delay completion and possibly lead to more cost than necessary.
