 Packaging Tape Facilitates Commerce

Packaging tape is a versatile product that offers solutions to a variety of problems, from wrapping presents to securing furniture. However, some people are hesitant to use this product because they're unsure how it works. In this article, I will give you the basics on how packaging tape has been used throughout history and offer you some tips on how to use it effectively in your everyday life.

Packaging tape was first patented by Eugenia Joyner in March 3rd 1957 in Los Angeles under the US Patent 2067195B2F
The invention came about when Joyner found herself having both white and colored pieces of different sizes which she had purchased at once for her daughter's room one day. She decided to have a way to eliminate the waste involved in the process of switching between the various sizes of tape and began researching material options. It took her nearly a week to find what she was looking for but then created an easy way to store each type of tape. It was like having a paint color catalog within reach as well as being able to purchase all that she needed in one place. She went on to buy several hundred rolls of each kind of tape which she sold through a professional auctioneer, who priced them at $17.50 per roll or $3.00 per hundred. This business was a success.

Packaging tape is made of high-quality adhesive paper that is coated on top with a thin layer of plastic or latex and then paperboard. The material is somewhat elastic and usually comes in rolls ranging from one to twelve feet in length and accommodating from one to five thousand feet of tape. This type of tape has been around since the early seventies when it was first created out of necessity for manufacturing plant workers who had to change their clothes, using cardboard boxes taped with pieces of sticky tape to keep their clothing slung in place. It was not until the mid 70s when a worker by the name of John Borden who worked at 3M, a company that produces tape, gave this product its name after he used it to fix an envelope. He was quoted saying that "I needed some tape to keep the envelope closed and I tried a piece of Scotch Brand packing tape. It worked great so I just left it on there. I thought it would come off easily but I forgot about it and taped over some other pieces of paper."

Today, even though we have advanced technology such as Velcro® hooks and magnetic closures, our tape is still used to hold closed anything from boxes to envelopes made with paper as well as plastic wrap for glass. Perhaps the most popular product that uses packaging tape is Ziploc®, an airtight plastic bag used for storing food and other products.

Packaging Tape: A History of Applying It to a Wide Range of Uses

Assorted Colors of Tape

"Whether it's a gift wrapping, a supply box for business, or an air freshener for a car, packaging tape provides an easy way to accomplish these objectives."
Companies such as 3M and Scotch have created various kinds of packaging material ranging from plain white to specialty-colored tapes. The display at this store in the Uptown district provides a visual representation of the variety in colors.

Packaging Tape: Paper or Plastic?

"Packaging tape is mainly used to close boxes and other containers, but it can also be used to hold plastic wrap to the windows of a car and even in art projects that require lots of layering."
The clear packaging tape provides a protective cover for CDs, DVDs and other delicate items. You can even use this same kind of tape in your home when you want to hang posters or unframed artwork on the wall. It is lighter than tacks, making it easier to put up displays without making holes in your wall.

Conclusion

Distribution of tape is done through different companies. In the art industry, 3M is one of the most used brands. For example, Nicole Koolhaas uses it for her projects. She is an artist and a professor of art at the University of Iowa. Her use of tape in her artwork has spread throughout college campuses to other artists’ techniques. It began with a single piece called "The Unwind." It is a five-foot-long roll that creates a small sphere that lies on its side in the middle of the room. She unraveled the roll until it formed a ball, but unlike one you would find in nature; this was composed of one color and no variation would occur throughout its plane.
