Pharmacy Jobs - What, Where And How?

We're not all lucky enough to have a job waiting for us in the field we studied in college. It can be hard to find your niche and feel that you are making the best use of your skills and experience. However, there are some bright spots in the job market and pharmacy is one of them.

If you want to find a rewarding, satisfying career in a fast-growing industry, then you should read this post on pharmacy jobs. We'll take you through what they entail, where they're located, and how to get in the door!

A lot of people don't know what pharmacists actually do but it's an incredibly diverse profession that can suit almost any personality type. But what makes pharmacy interesting, especially for people who are thinking about their future career, is that the profession is constantly changing.

What's Happening In Pharmacy Right Now?
The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing an exciting time of experimentation with new ways of dispensing medication that are helping to reduce sickness and death while improving overall health and quality of life. This is all being done by innovators in the field, such as pharmacists, who are at the forefront of making this happen.

It is also making the job of a pharmacist more interesting and rewarding by bringing new roles into focus. More people are having to familiarize themselves with these changes and are seeing that pharmacists are in a good position to take advantage of them. These shifts have brought many new career opportunities that are designed to make life easier for patients while also making pharmacist's work less tedious.

Take a look at this infographic, which has some fascinating facts about job trends in the field:

Here's how I created this infographic: I searched "pharmacist" on Google Images and used its own search function to narrow down the results to only images related to the field. Both old and new photographs were selected. Some were cropped to place emphasis on specific details — like the different containers that drugs come in — while others were used to show the changes in style of dressing over the years. Overall, these photos represent trends in the industry that I feel make a difference in how pharmacists operate and interact with their patients.

Since this is an infographic about pharmacy jobs, I also included some statistics about wage growth as well as projected numbers of new jobs by 2022. I sourced these from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, respectively.

Finally, I included two quotes at the bottom that I found on Google by searching for a "pharmacist's quote" and specifically only choosing quotes that matched up with the theme of my infographic.
It was a lot of fun to put together and I hope you enjoyed reading it!

More Than Half of Pharmacists Under 30 Are Gonna Quit Because Of The Work
Pharmacists at almost half the age they used to be are planning to quit or retire because they don't see a future in it. This is according to research by SAGE Research reveal this week.
Pharmacies will have to get smarter about how they communicate with their customers if they want to ensure that people continue using them and filling prescriptions.
A new survey of pharmacists found wide-ranging dissatisfaction with the profession, including its low pay, time pressures and high health care costs.
"Pharmacists' relatively low pay and a lack of appreciation for their work appear to be major reasons for the projected shortages," says Dr. David Harlow, CEO of SAGE.
But that's not the only problem here.
Only 40% of pharmacists are happy with their job according to the report . That number drops down to just 19% when talking about physicians and nurses. It's a similar story for the industry as a whole, with the report finding that only 30% of employers are satisfied with the work environment.
As we found out in our post here , two out of three pharmacists aren't going to be in their jobs for more than five years. This is despite the fact that their pay rate is still relatively low compared to other healthcare workers.
The report suggests that customers wanting to talk to someone about their prescription should visit a pharmacist before going elsewhere. After all, they know what medicine will work best for them and will be able to communicate this effectively with each patient.
That way, pharmacists will see a greater benefit for their own work and continue with their jobs.
Pharmaceutical Caregivers are the newest trend in the pharmacy industry. It is a whole new way for pharmacists to interact with their patients; this new wave of pharmacists will help create better, more holistic care for people all around the country.
Locations have begun popping up in big cities which harness this concept of having a conversation between pharmacist and patient. One that is making waves in the healthcare world is Walgreens: they have been pushing forward to employ 16,000 "walgreens healthcare advisors" by 2020.
Pharmacy locations are now becoming more like a pharmacy and a waiting room. Rather than the regular back and forth pick up, drop off and check out, the pharmacist will carry on an exchange with the patient. This discussion is to be about drugs in addition to other health variables like their diet or exercise routine.
This kind of relationship between patients and pharmacists is considered one of the top ways of improving medications for individual patients. It also allows for people to feel more safe while taking medication.
According to big pharmaceutical companies it will help patients by making them more comfortable when they are seeking medical help from their pharmacists. By having these conversations it makes medication adherence easier and better overall care for their patient's health outcomes.

Conclusion
This is a step into the right direction for the pharmaceutical industry. Creating a conversation between patient and pharmacist allows for a better understanding of the patient's health and also allows them to feel more at ease while they are taking their medications.
The pay isn't all that great, but a lot of people do still enjoy pharmacists because they see them as an authority figure, just like doctors or nurses. The job itself isn't something to be taken lightly though; being able to stay on top of all new medicines, new allergies and all other things is extremely time consuming for pharmacists (and probably one of the most difficult parts).
