Pharmacy Schools - A Closer Look
National Pharmacy College of Canada
The National Pharmacy College of Canada is a provincially-funded, bilingual school for healthcare professionals. The college offers education and training to pharmacy professionals including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy clerks. The college has been accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Accrediting Commission (CAPAC) since 2012. Graduates from the program receive the undergraduate degree of Bachelor in Pharmacy or Bachelor in Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences and may continue their studies to become a pharmacist or pharmaceutical scientist through post-graduate studies or obtain employment as a pharmacist, medical technologist, nurse practitioner or nurse specialist after graduation. Also, they may obtain a graduate degree in pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences.
The college was formed in 2003 as an arm's-length agency of the government of Ontario to administer the province's pharmacy program. The provincial government had previously created the Ontario College of Pharmacists in 1967 to supervise education and training of pharmacists in the province. That college was subsequently merged into the newly formed National College of Pharmacy (NCP) in 1999. Since 2003, NCP has been responsible for providing accredited bachelor's degrees, diplomas and certificates for pharmacists across Ontario and for accrediting post-graduate programs for pharmacists at accredited colleges and universities which offer such programs.
On November 1, 2007, the provincial government of Manitoba announced its intention to merge the Manitoba College of Pharmacists with the NCP by 2008. The new college would be named the Canadian College of Pharmacy and would continue under the administration of NCP. The Manitoba government said that it transferred $2 million in funding to the college to help pay for this move. This merger was completed on July 1, 2008.
The Canadian College is a member agency of World Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (WACp), World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), and North American Accreditation Process (NAP) which represents accrediting agencies recognized by Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
