Promotional Products Don't Work, Unless You Do This...

If you're like most business owners, you use promotional items as a way of drawing customers in. But there's a big difference between giving away cheap items and actually promoting your product or idea. Promotional materials can be frustrating to design and create, yet they don't work unless they're done properly. Here are the three steps that'll ensure your promotional pieces will really stick out:

1) Set the right tone for your brand. Before creating any materials, ask yourself how often people should see them, where they'll be used (location-specific vs. universal), who they'll appeal to (quality of customers), etc. For example, if you own a restaurant, your promotional materials should speak to your customers, and encourage them to return.
2) Make it personal. Just because you're giving away limited-edition items doesn't mean the pieces have to be off-the-cuff. Use your logo in all three color variations (or more) and make sure there are several choices that reflect how appropriate they'll be for different locations.
3) Go simple with graphics and fonts. Too much stuff can distract from what you're trying to say, while too little is too bland. Choose a small number of dominant colors and keep them consistent across all materials. And use no more than two fonts, both serif and sans-serif, because anything more can become a jumbled mess (hello, Comic Sans).
