Computerworld, originally called Infopackets, is the world's leading professional IT networking and consumer technology publication for computer professionals and enthusiasts, with a current print readership of over 687,000 in 33 countries worldwide (Source: Cision).

Computerworld has published a number of articles that branched out into other topics. One of the most notable was while they were still called Infopackets and was an article in the UK Magazine Computer Weekly from April 2008. It was expanded in Computerworld and became a very popular web site for IT professionals.

The original article entitled "Taking Benefits of SharePoint" contains the following information:

"Microsoft has said it will let companies deploy its upcoming SharePoint 2010 and 2007 products on servers running Windows Server 2003 or 2008, with some administrative steps to be performed to harmonise certain features.

The regular deployment of SharePoint will account for most of Microsoft's IT spend, with the company anticipating spending about $4.4bn to roll out its next two-tier products – SharePoint 2010 Server and SharePoint 2007 Server – throughout 2011. Microsoft's Connectivity team has indicated that businesses that start rolling out the technology now will see the benefits in 2012.

Microsoft claims that enterprises are already starting to see "tangible business benefits" from the extension of SharePoint's lifespan to a decade, but that businesses are now looking at long-term investment plans in their IT multimillion dollar budgets. The majority of those plans include Microsoft's SharePoint, said project manager Ali Fowja.

The company had previously said it would extend the deployment to 2003 and 2008 servers, but this provides a more efficient process for customers."

"Microsoft recently announced that SharePoint Online will be extended to support Windows Server 2008 R2. What effect will this have on existing businesses? The short answer is: not very much. Microsoft's big push with Windows Server has been aimed at businesses that run on older software - namely NT 4, Exchange 5, and File Management (FIM). At least six years old. Pre-2003 if you're talking about Exchange.

You may be using Office 2007, and maybe even SharePoint 2007 - if so then you're OK. However if your infrastructure is more than a few years old, you should go for the upgrade to 2008 R2 rather than stay on 2003."

"SharePoint Server is getting a little long in the tooth at this point and while it has been extended by Microsoft to run on Windows Server 2008 R2, it won't run on Windows Server 2008 R1 or even Windows Server 2003. In this article I'll take a look at how long it'll survive in terms of Microsoft support. SharePoint Server is an important application because it enables complete collaboration between the various roles in an organisation.

Microsoft Support Lifecycle

Microsoft issued a press release on March 21, 2009, stating that: 'we are extending our support policy for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003, Project Server 2003 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 products by one year to 11 years after their general availability dates'.

This will include any service packs and hotfixes released after the general availability date. As of June 30, 2009 SharePoint Server is available in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 R2."

"So, you've decided it's time to let the side down with some new technology and while you're at it, why not consider a SharePoint strategy? And one that really complements your existing business objectives. Well, I'm going to give you 3 reasons for doing so and if you think about them for just a minute, you're going to be convinced that SharePoint makes sense for your company.

1. SharePoint is a proven product. All of the SharePoint technology has been developed and tested in production for well over a decade. The technology works in the way it's designed and is designed precisely for your business needs, taking them into the future whilst providing a stable foundation to build upon."

"SharePoint 2010 gets its share of the blame for Microsoft's dismal SharePoint announcements during June. As you can read from this article, there was a lot more to it than just the big announcement but it's Sharepoint that people remember. We have recently been asked about the impact of SharePoint 2010 on Microsoft support for SharePoint 2007."

Microsoft and the Internet are still extremely inexpensive compared to alternatives like email and VOIP. The cost of an Internet phone call is much higher. A 30 minute satellite phone call to France (or any other European country) will run about $4.00 - $5.00 on average for the first minute, after that it's about $0.20/minute (or lower).

If you're used to faxing and are not considering the costs of sending items via email or a disk storage system, give us a call at 1-855-633-8727 and we'll help guide you in the right direction on finding the right IT solution for your requirements.

"There are some large corporations which have gone so far as to ask their employees to "spend time only in Outlook".

Conclusion: With SharePoint, you can do this. You use Outlook to reach colleagues, or indeed to manage your own network of contacts. You use SharePoint to access documents, or indeed to stay in touch with all the other people who are part of your organization."

"SharePoint 2010 uses Blob Storage, but it doesn't come with a storage account that has storage - it comes with an Outlook connection to Microsoft's online storage service. This new service isn't just for SharePoint - it's also used by Office and Project and from what I understand is being trumpeted as a reason for buying Office 2010 Home & Student.
