So What's In It For ME?
If you're having trouble finding your path after college, or feel like you have a lack of direction in your life, this might be the post for you. We'll talk about how to develop an action plan for yourself and what the benefits are to focusing on self-improvement rather than climbing up an old ladder that may not even be there anymore.
Life is fluid. People enter it at different points, at different stages and with different intentions. But no matter where they come from or when they arrive, they all want their lives to count. They want to know what’s in it for them - and we want to show them how they can get that knowledge today.
What If You Don't Have a Plan?
Many of us go to college in search of a better life for ourselves. We get into the program that will get us the job that we think will make us happy, but what if you find that the job doesn’t make you happy and instead makes you feel like you’re just existing, not living? There’s no way you can move up in your company if you don't have a plan. If your goal is to climb up management, then put yourself through school so you have time to work on your career while still getting an education.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR PERSONALITY
Perhaps you identify with the idea of being driven by your career, but you’re not sure what your personality is. So, let’s start there. My own career path was never planned. Aside from Math in high school and various classes I chose to take, it was completely circumstantial and that is because I didn’t know what my career path would be. I see myself as a stubborn person and wanted to do something that I felt I was good at, but in order to find that path I had to first figure out who I was.
I took the Myers-Briggs personality test. I knew that it was nothing more than a survey and some interesting data, but when I looked at the results they were very telling. Not only did they give me a description of my general personality, but they also gave me the traits outlined in each of the four types: ENTP, INTP, ESTP and ESFP. This information showed me where I mesh with others, where I mesh with myself and most importantly, how to interact with other people so that the outcome was productive. It also showed me that if I followed a path in which my personality was being presented as the direction, I’d be happy. Simple as that.
Life is fluid. People enter it at different points, at different stages and with different intentions. But no matter where they come from or when they arrive, they all want their lives to count. They want to know what’s in it for them - and we want to show them how they can get that knowledge today.
PEOPLE BUILD ON EACH OTHER
Did you know that people build on each other? It may sound like a cliché but it’s true. If you go to a party and come across someone who is friendly and fun, you will most likely be more outgoing if the person is around. People do not have to be friends with one another, but they do need to interact with one another in order for life to continue along its path. Meeting with people and being around them will make you more outgoing, which will give others the opportunity to show their personalities as well. This creates a circle that feeds into itself as people build on each other's decisions.
But this circle can become too large if people are not careful. People will be drawn to others who share similar values and ideas, but when it is time for them to decide what that value or idea should be, they may end up choosing something that is not the best for them. They pick up negative traits from those around themselves and have to deal with them in their lives in order to get rid of the bad stuff they picked up. All of these things can drain the energy out of your life so much so that you feel like you don’t want to get up in the morning.
YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR PATH
While it may be frustrating to deal with the people around you, or to deal with your own personality, it is not impossible. I have seen people make positive changes in their own lives and while they may have been difficult at first, they did not last long at all. If you follow the same path that everybody else is walking on, you are going to get the same results. So if you want to make your life count for something, find out what you value most in life and how to achieve the goals that will help you reach that goal.
Conclusion:
