So, You Want To Work In The IT Industry?
"So, you want to work in the IT industry?" I hear that more and more these days. Most of them are people who have been hired by a company or business, and now need to find some way of training themselves up. It's not as easy as it was back in the day when we didn't have so many educational avenues for those entering this industry, but before you despair too much about not having a traditional university degree for your job search — take comfort in knowing that there are plenty of other ways to enter this field.
One such way is to start from the bottom up with an apprenticeship program. These are targeted at giving you the skills you need to perform your job well, as opposed to an education which will mostly teach you the theory behind those skills. Are there benefits to studying for a degree? Of course! But it's very important that you know what those benefits are before jumping into the deep end.
For example, if your job requires knowledge of specific programming languages — or even finding out what they are — then taking a Computer Programming Degree can very much help you there. There are small, specialized colleges that offer a focus on such programming languages for your career in the IT industry.
On the other hand, if your goal is to be on the technical side of things and you want to be working with networking, then an IT Studies Degree might help you more. It's important to keep in mind that these degrees may not have any direct bearing on the actual job you're trying to get. This means they'll only provide you with a theoretical knowledge of something that's already been done. If someone is hiring you for this position, it may not be as easy as pointing out what degree course you were taking and then listing off all the stuff that was covered.
It's essential that you research the education courses in relation to what job you're doing. It's really very important to know what type of skills you're trying to learn, as the way you learn is vastly different depending on what it is that you're learning. How do graduates usually learn IT? Well, they usually start with a foundation course which teaches them how computers work, what programming languages are there, and some basics of networking. In these courses — and this will vary from institution to institution — they'll cover all the job-related knowledge that's needed for their career path in IT. They'll be introduced to new concepts, such as cloud technology or mobile apps for smartphones and tablets, etc.
After they've completed all of these courses, they may have advanced to an IT training program, or a specialized course in such a specific area as programming. And then at some point, if they're really serious about their career and want to become an IT professional, then they may move on to a degree course specifically for that arena.
Now you might ask: "So why do all this when you've already got your job?" There are many reasons for studying IT. The first is that it can be incredibly interesting and satisfying work! Once you learn the ins and outs of information technology, it will make you happy to know how much information affects someone's day-to-day life. It's a very attractive field as it's constantly changing, so you will never get bored or feel like you're stuck in a rut.
Second, it has the potential to make you very well-rounded when it comes to job offers. Having a degree in IT can open many doors for the rest of your life. As the Internet continues to grow and computer use becomes more universal, this line of expertise is going to become more and more sought after. You may be able to go into business for yourself as a mobile app developer, or find work as a self-employed computer programmer. This can be an excellent way of getting into freelance work — which is really good if you want control over your own agenda and hours.
And finally, the best reason for studying IT is to be able to sit down and work for yourself. If you're good at what you do and have the necessary experience, you will find it easy to run your own company as a freelance business. You won't need anyone else as your employees — so that means there's less expense involved on your part, since no one else will take a share of your profits!
Which brings me to this…the IT industry is a really lucrative field of expertise these days. It's one of the fields that those starting out in their careers usually look into because of this. It's also a great field for stay-at-home parents to look into in order to supplement the family's income and give them more freedom.
Any of these reasons are great ones as to why you should pursue IT, but keep in mind also that it's not an easy job market to break into. There are many people who want these jobs — and the companies that need these workers can be very choosy about who they hire for such positions. This is why having a computer programming degree won't necessarily get you a job, especially nowadays when there are so many other training programs out there. If you want this kind of job…you may have to aim higher than what your current skillset is.
Some people have to adapt their jobs so that they can get a job in IT. Maybe you're selling computers and smartphones and other hardware, where you can cross-sell a computer programming degree? Or perhaps you work as an accountant for a company that sells hardware — as well as other things — maybe you can convince your boss to hire you for an IT position instead?
It may take some serious negotiation on your part, but if you really want that IT position, then it might be worth it. It may be difficult at first while the rest of your life is in upheaval due to the new job…but it's totally worth the effort! Another viable option is to look into working with nonprofits or government organizations. They may be in need of your expertise in some area. Another side-job is to become a web developer or graphic designer. It doesn't pay very well, but it's a good way of getting into the IT field if you're still working at your current job for the time being.
A lot of people who are trying to make their way into the IT field are using freelance work to get by while they try and work their way up. And once they finally get that job that they've worked so hard for…then they can put all that hard-learned knowledge to great use!
