The Catalog Printing Process
The Catalog Printing Process
When you order a catalog, it can take anywhere from one to three weeks for the finished product to arrive in your mailbox. The process begins with a graphic designer and ends with the mailed catalog. All this time, the printer needs to know where to print each page of your beautiful design. How does this printing process work? How long does it take? What is involved in making a catalog? Find out how all that works today!
Catalog printing is an exciting yet delicate process that often takes weeks or even months of planning before finally turning out beautiful designs on paper. For starters, every single page of any size or style must be created by either a graphic designer or an illustrator (no submissions). Once completed, the designer or illustrator delivers this artwork to a project manager who receives the files via any electronic means (cloud services, FTP sites and so on). The project manager ensures that all the files are present and that they are ready to be printed. If not, they will contact the designer or illustrator for any missing pieces.
Next, it is important that the catalog printing process is started as soon as possible to ensure speedy production times. Project managers usually have deadlines to meet with clients and these need to be maintained. After receiving all of the design files, it can take 24-48 hours for a set of preliminary pages to be approved by everyone involved (client, designer/editor and printer). Once approved, the project manager will complete a PDF of the catalog and send it to the printer to start production.
In this part of the catalog printing process, a proof of each page is run through a digital press. This takes approximately 4-5 hours per page, depending on size and quantity. Once completed, the printer reviews each page or spread of pages and checks for any mistakes. If there are any issues with the page they will be addressed before moving onto another set of pages to be printed. This process can take 1-3 weeks as only a small portion of pages are printed at a time so that problems can be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Once printed, the printer puts each page into a folder and sends it to the client for review.
Once received by the client, this step of the catalog printing process allows time to review and amend any errors that were made during the production phase. The project manager will be alerted in order to address any problems. It is important too that clients pay close attention to how text is set and positioned on certain pages as well as how graphics are used in order to maintain a look of professionalism.
This is an important point in the catalog printing process as it allows a client or person responsible for layout or design of pages to understand what needs to be done next so that production can resume quickly. Once corrections are made, this stage can take anywhere from one to three weeks depending on the client's requirements. Once these changes have been made, production of each page must be completed within another 24 hours.
This is an important step in the catalog printing process as it allows time for proofing after the layout has been scrutinised. The project manager will then inform any client that checks need to be done and will send them a list of pages for which proofs need to be printed. A printed proof of each page or spread is given to the client so that they can make amendments if necessary. Once amendments are accepted by the client, it takes approximately two hours for each page or spread of pages to be proofed and approved.
When this step in catalog printing is completed, it means that the press operator can start printing the final copies. This is a fairly quick process as each page or spread of pages only takes two hours to print. Once printed, bound and collated into booklets or other desired forms, the printer ships them to the client for delivery. Once received by the client, they are ready to be distributed or sold. This whole process from artwork creation to final production can take anywhere from one month to three months depending on size and style as well as level of modification that needs to be made during design and production.
The creation of a catalog goes through many steps to ensure the highest quality of work. It takes a team of designers and printers working together to create beautiful pieces that are eye catching and professional in nature. Each step in the catalog printing process is vital to the creation of an excellent finished product. By planning ahead, both project managers and clients can ensure that their product is made as quickly as possible.
