The Humble Postcard Is Making A Comeback
It's not just QWERTY keyboards. As the world evolves into a digital age, many people still have an affinity for tangible things. And by tangible, we mean anything physical and concrete rather than the flashy and intangible bits of information that exist only on screens or in data clouds.
To those people and everyone else alike, here are 12 reasons why postcards are making a comeback:
1) A Postcard is Personal - it's something you can't get from an email or text message. It says "I thought of you. I wish you were here. I miss you. I love you."
2) A Postcard is Silly - and nothing puts a smile on someone's face like the silly stuff! Unless of course it's incredibly thoughtful, touching or useful information and advice. But that's another blog post for another day.
3) A Postcard is Cheap - just print it out or order one from your local post office or a stamp shop.
4) A Postcard is Easy to Scrapbook - no matter how personal, thoughtful, silly or useful. This can be used as a very easy way to hold onto all your memories without overwhelming you with clutter in your home. Here are some of my favorite ways I use postcards:
Postcards on their own as a project against a wall somewhere in the house (this is one of my personal favorites).
Postcards in table runners or door hangers.
Postcards in the back of notebooks. The back of notebook page is a great place to store postcards (or scraps). I've used this option for postcards as scrapbook pages, notepads and napkins.
5) A Postcard is Cheap to Keep - another way to save yourself some money without giving up on the idea that it's so meaningful. Some companies like Green Mountain Migratory Postcards are selling postcards (OR gift cards!) that can be used at fundraisers or special events where you can send them cards, postcards or gifts.
6) A Postcard is Inexpensive - you can send a postcard for about 50 cents in first class postage. And you can make it even more affordable by getting an even better deal at bulk rates when you buy in bulk!
7) A Postcard Is Easy - and it doesn't take much to write a quick thank you or message on the back of postcards. I've heard stories of people who are so busy, not only running their businesses but also running their households, that there's no time for anything else in life. In this case, you can write notes on the back of postcards even if there's not enough time to buy cards, or bring cards with you when there's no time to sit and scribble out a note.
8) A Postcard is Great for Kids - let your kids decorate them or write little messages on the back - it's a great way to keep them writing if they're in school. If they're not in school, it'll give you an easy way to keep sending them something in the mail without much hassle!
9) A Postcard is Recyclable but Lovable - It's not uncommon for people to have very strong feelings towards paper and anything that comes in direct contact with paper. Believe it or not, there are people who get emotionally attached to things like paper and stamps. In fact, there's even a video that goes into this !
10) A Postcard is Personalized - whether it's handmade or mass produced, a postcard can make someone feel special. For example, I send out at least one postcard per week just to let people know I'm thinking about them. And every time I get a postcard, it makes me smile, no matter how long ago I sent it!
11) A Postcard is Practical - even if you're not the type to write notes on the back of postcards, you can still use them as good resources for getting practical bit of information. Here are some examples of things that can be found on postcards:
Maps to places far away from home (or sometimes near home)
Detailed directions to places near and far - especially if you're going out of town for a family event or road trip.
Weather forecasts that tell you what to expect before you go out in public.
Detailed information about the location of important buildings and landmarks near where you live.
12) A Postcard is a Tradition - whatever your personal feelings towards postcards are, one thing's for sure - not everyone's going to stop sending postcards. Some traditions last a long time, others are only new at the start or end of a holiday season. But whatever your situation, there will still be lots of people sending postcards even if you're not one of them! Perhaps this is just an act of love from one person to another. Perhaps it's an unconscious continuation of an old tradition that goes back hundreds of years... who knows? But it's likely that no matter what your personal feelings towards postcards are, you're bound to come across them in some form for the rest of your life.

Conclusion In the world of today, it's quite easy for anyone to make light of any type of expression that doesn't necessarily have a direct value in their daily lives. Even so, there are still many people who generate a great deal of their identity from these kinds of traditions.
