One particular action is being taken by many small business owners which though having great potential can do more harm than good to their growth. This action is referred to as "Sharking".
What is Sharking?
These owners are generally very competitive people, who like to play games with their customers and prospects. They compete and challenge each other, year after year, in the same territory. To win a potential customer, they would do literally anything to get them away from their competition. In the process of being so competitive, it is possible for these owners to cross some ethical boundaries which can lead them into trouble.
These businessmen resort to tricks like pretending that they don't even know about the competitors' existence or pretending that they are specialised in certain services which are not offered by any of the other players in their particular industry.
This is where the name comes from, they are literally "sharking".
What's the problem?
There is a big problem with this approach. Consider this, if you do something that helps one person, it's not just that individual who will be thankful for your help, but the whole market. This will affect everyone in that industry in a positive way. So by doing something out of pure greed and desperation to gain an edge over one or two of your competitors you could have an unforeseen effect on all other competitors as well as potential customers! Although there is nothing wrong with being competitive, it needs to be done without hurting others and without taking unfair advantages which they can't defend themselves against.
If you are in that desperate situation of having to do whatever you can to survive, you have several options:
1.  You can leave the industry altogether and move into a different market where competition is less stiff.
2.  You can approach your competition and ask them for suggestions on how to overcome your challenges and come up with an agreement on how to co-exist with each other in the same market.
3.  Improve your product or service, making it better than any other competitor out there! Then no one would dare try to steal a potential customer away from you!
The above three points are possible solutions but yes, it takes more time, effort and resources to implement them compared to using sharking techniques.
I have chosen to mention sharking because it is becoming a bit of a problem in the business world nowadays. Many companies which have gone under could have survived if they had done their homework, researched and understood their market, their customers' psychology and used ethical marketing tactics.
