What Market Research Can Do For Your Online Business
Online businesses might view market research as an unnecessary and expensive expense. However, there has never been more data available about shoppers’ needs and opinions than there is today. Many businesses are incorporating this data into their products, services, and marketing strategies in order to be more successful. Market research takes the guesswork out of what information will help businesses increase revenue and improve the quality of their business.
Obviously there are many different types of market research techniques out there, but chances are you have heard or used one of the following: surveys, questionnaires, data collection methods, or search engine marketing (SEM).
Surveys are commonly used by businesses that sell products and services. On a survey form, a participant enters his/her email address to receive information about the company and then selects from a list of options on subsequent survey pages. Each option is called a "selector" because that is what the respondent chooses from when completing each page. The responses from the survey are usually recorded and analyzed as a means to gain information about potential customers.
Questionnaires tend to be used for more in-depth market research. The questionnaire is sent to most of the contacts associated with a company and it asks for more detailed information about the target audience. A questionnaire might ask additional questions or feature different scales than a survey and might be categorized into several different topic areas. This can help the business understand how customers view their product or service before they even purchase it, or it can help them determine future marketing strategies before they ever launch a campaign.
Data collection methods use automated ways to gain information through emails, phone calls, or Social Media platforms (i.e. Facebook and Twitter.) Companies are able to collect an immense amount of data through these methods, including a person's name, email address, company they work for, and even their Social Security number. While this data is not limited to market research, it can help companies gain insights into shoppers' behaviors.
Search engine marketing (SEM) uses keywords selected by businesses to advertise their products online. This can be done through Google AdWords or Bing ads or through other similar programs designed for small businesses. Businesses use these tools to reach potential customers when they are searching for related products or solutions online. With SEM the business is able to capture information about customers before they even click on the ad or leave the search results page.
While the digital age has made it easier to access market research, there are still some ways in which a business might better use this technology to obtain the information they need. It is important to remember that these methods can cost money, require time and effort, or both. Market research not only provides you with valuable insights into your target audience, but it will also help you refine your product or service offerings while also informing you of potential flaws in your company or marketing strategy. The advantages of having accurate and reliable data outweigh any disadvantages of conducting market research as long as it's used properly.
