What Marketing Can Do For You
I recently hung up the phone with a close friend of mine. He left me a voicemail informing me that he had just opened an office in Portland, Oregon, and would need some help with marketing his business.
Now, as someone who has always been a huge fan of my friend's business, I was more than happy to help him out. However, before I could even get into any specifics about how I would be able to help him, he began questioning me about the importance of marketing in relation to his new office.
"Of course marketing is important," He told me, "But it can also be pretty expensive and time consuming. Therefore, it makes more sense to trim down my spending on marketing and instead focus more on training my staff. After all, that's what really matters."
My friend's comments really got me thinking about the importance of marketing. And it just so happened that I had just come across an article entitled "What Marketing Can Do For You" from my friend Ben Casnocha, who is a well-known writer and consultant on marketing.
"What exactly," I wondered, "could marketing do for a company?"
The Jargon Of The Marketing Industry
If you look at most industries, there are many different names for the same thing: For example, in travel you will often hear about "marketing," "sales," or even "operations." The same goes for restaurants and hotels. And believe it or not, that's even true when it comes to real estate!
Yet, despite the fact that these industries have unique names for the same thing, you can still learn a lot from their terminology. So, if you are confused by the jargon of the marketing industry, just remember that they're simply referring to the process of getting people to give you their money.
For example: A chef typically goes through an "operation" in order to get his food out; a real estate broker typically goes through a "marketing" process in order to make sales; and a travel agent is going through "sales" when he or she is booking travel for someone.
Marketing Is About Communicating
Marketing is simply about communicating with your potential customers. Or, if you prefer to think of it another way, marketing is all about getting the word out about your business in order for potential customers to hear about it.
Whether you're trying to spread the word about how great your product is or how great your service is, marketing is all about getting people's attention before they make a decision. And by doing so, you help them make the correct buying decisions that will help them get what they want or need.
However, to be successful with marketing, you must remember that it is much easier to persuade people when they are already looking for something. Now, for most of us small business owners this means that we will have to spend significant amounts of time and money on getting our products or services out there.
But before you go running off in frustration by the many expenses involved in marketing your business, keep this in mind: Marketing is very often like planting a garden. In fact, just as it requires time and dedication to start a garden (and lots of dollars spent on purchasing all the necessary supplies), marketing also requires time and dedication (as well as lots of dollars).
But Once You Do Get Your Garden Started…
Once you get your garden started (or in this case, once you start marketing your business), the rewards can be tremendous. Not only will you have great relationships with your customers and a lot of new sales and opportunities, but you'll also be a lot less stressed out about everything. Sure, it might be tough to get everything started, but once it does get started, the rest usually takes care of itself.
So if you're looking for ways to improve the customer experience of your business or looking for more opportunities to broaden the reach of your business, there is no better strategy than getting into the world of marketing.
