The goal of this post is to help new or seasoned entrepreneurs who are considering becoming business owners to identify some key marketing roles they might be interested in.
Marketing roles that might interest an entrepreneur include: event planner, event coordinator, finance manager, graphic designer, PR/Social Media Manager, Web Producer/Producer, blog content creator/editor.
Many marketing roles require only a college degree. Some of these positions require advanced degrees, however. So if you have a degree but aren't sure what kind of position you'd like to do in marketing, this list might help you to identify a career path that you'll enjoy.

1. Event Planner/Coordinator
Event planners arrange events and coordinate activities such as guest lists, entertainment and refreshments. The event planner would be an important member of the team responsible for making sure that all marketing efforts make money and connect with audiences.
2. Event Coordinator
Job Description: The Event Coordinator is typically the point-person between the event planner and all other departments (marketing, PR, communications, etc.) within a company or organization. They report to both the business owner and the CEO and are responsible for creating weekly update reports and reporting on financial accountability. The Event Coordinator reconciles all departmental reports to ascertain that all necessary expenses have been paid and that any questions or comments from departments have been addressed.
3. Finance Manager/Accountant
Job Description: This person is responsible for handling the general accounting duties of their business as well as offering insight into trends in finances. They would be responsible for communicating financial information to the marketing team and ensuring that the marketing strategy is compatible with the company's objectives. This person also would be involved in financial forecasting as well as budgeting and cash flow planning.
4. Graphic Designer/Web Producer/Producer
Job Description: This individual is responsible for producing high-quality images, graphics and photography for use on print media such as brochures, magazine ads, fliers and websites. The graphic designer may also create logos to represent their company or client's brand; they may also provide other support services such as designing trade show booths or web pages. A graphic designer may also be responsible for creating animations, videos and other interactive content to enhance their client's web presence. In addition, some graphic designers create illustrations and cartoons. Finally, others work in-house as producers or producers and may produce video presentations for websites.
5. PR/Social Media Manager
Job Description: The role of the PR is to implement marketing programs that will build awareness and trust in a brand name among its target audience through media relations activities with the press, analysts and other third parties as well as by providing information about products or services to customers or prospects via social media such as Facebook or Twitter.
6. Web Producer/Producer
Job Description: The web producer is responsible for designing and maintaining websites. These individuals develop web page content and make sure the sites are up-to-date, relevant and user friendly. Some web producers also have duties such as designing advertisements or other marketing collateral to promote their company's products, selecting illustrations and photography, developing podcasts or video presentations, integrating social media into the site, reviewing vendor contracts (for areas like search engine marketing or affiliate programs), hiring experts to write articles for a website or blog, analyzing trends in website traffic or populating databases with information on customers and other prospects.
7. Blog Content Creator/Editor
Job Description: The blog or online content manager is responsible for creating original and unique content for a website or blog. This may be in the form of text, quotations, video clips, infographics, polls or other creative ideas that enrich a website's look and feel. They may also be responsible for editing existing blog articles to improve the readability of the content.
8. Web Designer
Job Description: The web designer creates graphics, logos and marketing collateral for use in print, on the web and in applications such as email. They are responsible for analyzing a company's brand identity, strategic objectives and target audience to create graphic designs that represent the company well. They may also coordinate product design, color schemes and layout of printed materials. These designers often work collaboratively with other groups within a business organisation such as the IT department or marketing team.
9. Web Developer
Job Description: The very same person who creates websites may also be called a web developer or web programmer depending on their line of work. Look for a job title that says one of the following: Web Designer, Web Programmer, Web Architect or Web Developer. The web developer is responsible for creating functional websites. This means they will design the layout of a website and make sure that content is accessible to everyone who visits it. As such they must be familiar with all aspects of website development including information architecture, security, search engine optimization and cross-platform issues.
10. Copywriter
Job Description: Copywriters are responsible for developing written materials that inform or persuade people to buy a product or service. They gather material from many sources including project managers, sales staff and marketing research and develop this material into compelling text, graphs, charts and case studies.
11. Sales Manager
Job Description: This person is responsible for the sales team and responsible for coaching and training of sales staff. The sales manager must have a good understanding of their employer's products, services and industry and be able to contribute to strategy development. They must also be able to coach, motivate and influence others so that they are able to successfully achieve business goals.
12. Sales Representative/Account Manager
Job Description: This position is typically held by an individual who has a technical or functional expertise in relation to the employer's product line. The sales representative sells those products by presenting them to potential customers either face-to-face or over the telephone. They are responsible for planning and executing sales calls and maintaining contact with clients. They may also attend conferences, trade shows and other industry events in order to promote products.
13. Sales Support/Customer Service Representative
Job Description: A sales support or customer service representative is typically an entry-level position responsible for assisting the sales team. Their duties may include answering the phone, responding to emails, updating a company's website with new information about a product, taking customer orders and fulfilling customer accounts. These individuals interact directly with customers or prospects on a daily basis to answer questions and resolve problems related to the company's products and services.
